Summary: recommend me a wet vac I can use to suck all the nasty water out of my A/C pan. So last summer I had issues with my pan under my A/C in the attic overflowing and staining my ceiling. This probably happened for a variety of reasons: My pan for some reason leans to the opposite side of where it drains Also for some reason the "kill switch" that cuts off the A/C when the water reaches a certain level was on the wrong side. So water was draining out the other end of the pan, and the kill switch was never switched. The drain pipes are probably clogged up because as a first time homeowner I knew nothing of keeping A/C drainage pipes clean, so didn't do anything…

I have an older B&D 14.4V Fire Storm cordless drill. This drill has 2 speed ranges and a wide range of torque settings. i really like it except for one minor problem. after many years of light use, i tried to use it only to find that both batteries are toast and that the charger puts out nothing. A quick search of the web shows that this is not an uncommon problem with these batteries and charger. I searched the web again and it looks like 2 replacement batteries and a charger would be at least $80. It occurs to me that I might be able to get an entire drill kit for not much more than that. So can anybody recommend a drill kit with similar features in the $80…

Would an EMU 0404 fit the bill on this? Then again it would be nice to spend a little more and get a unit that could also act as a nice external dac and/or headphone amp in a pinch. It doesn't appear that the Apogee MiniDac has inputs though.

I'm thinking about getting into recording. Portable recorder, maybe make a dummy head. Regular visits to the Younger Hall, field recordings, whatever. Anyone here into recording? Is there a forum for this sort of thing? Where does one learn which bits of kit are best to buy?

I've recently harvested a 40GB HD from an old Ultimate TV device and would like to use it with my pc. Problem is that it's locked. I'd seen some threads about using mhd3.exe to unlock and erase it which would then allow me to reformat and reuse it. Unfortunately, I'm having no success unlocking it. Does anyone here have an idea? Not trying to hack the drive so preserving the data isn't an issue. I'm really looking to just wipe it clean and start fresh. Suggestions appreciated.

Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions of what to read? Jeff recommended using a fire hose to fill it with water, but I do not think that would be ideal. More prefer to put some sort of absorbent material (foam? fiber board?) behind canvas prints. Also, speaker decoupling, to reduce noise transmission to the neighbors, seems like a good thing to do.

I'm currently setting up my desktop system in South Africa and will need to run my Ayre DAC off a step-down transformer, since it couldn't be converted to 240V. On the back it says 120V, 50/60Hz, 20 W max. I have a modest 60 W compact/travel step down to hand. To those of you who actually understand this stuff, am I likely to be OK powering the DAC off that? So, I recently stumbled on this site (http://src.infinitewave.ca/) where they compare various software-based SRC implementations. The tests compare 96kHz conversion down to 44.1kHz. Clicking on "Help" brings up an interesting article on the whole subject of SRC in general. Just by clicking through the results of a few popular DAW and audio editing apps, there are noticeable differences in the results that come out of that. That leaves me wondering...how good are the hardware-based upsampling algorithms in DAC's today? Does anyone have experience with this device. For some unknown ridiculous reason, my company only supports Windows Mobile devices. The device they supply is the Samsung Jack (on horrible ATT). This is the free and easy option. I could get another (Windows Mobile) device and have them jam it into the network, but I'm not sure how much of the tab they'll pick up. So for the moment, I'm trying to determine whether the Samsung Jack at least approaches the business feature set of a Blackberry or whether this is just a waste of time.

Here's something new for HC. I love to wear sandals. For the last 10 years or so, I've been very happy with Birkenstocks. Recently though, I've started suffering from shin splints even though I've been wearing Birkenstock sandals. This is a basic version with no cushioning and I think that the lack of cushioning is the problem. So can anybody recommend nice, supportive (I have a high arch) sandals? There are enough geeks (like me) here so I'm hoping to get some excellent responses.

I'm getting some weird grounding issues with my system. Any static discharge on my headphones/DAC/amp/computer (which is connected to the DAC via a USB converter) often causes my music to skip momentarily. Even ESD through my desk does it sometimes (and my desk is not electrically connected to my audio setup). One time, a particularly strong discharge caused my USB converter device to be unusable until a reboot. Anyone have suggestions on what to do? My apartment's flooring is all wood.

This is an odd topic but I'm looking for quick answers. I am having some Ikea solid beech wood butcher block counter tops installed in the Mayberry kitchen. They suggest sanding, sealing and oiling but they do not really give a lot of specifics. They sell some linseed oil but not a sealer and I am not sure if a sealer is necessary or recommended for use on butcher block counter tops or what to use and still be safe for food handling on them. Anybody have ideas for specific products or general procedures to employ or avoid?

I've been meaning to make a thread about this for over a year at this point. Last July I bought a Lord dual edge razor. It was like $12 and worth about as much as I paid for it. I also bought a 100 pack of Astra Platinum blades. Astras are made by Gillette in Russia. They offer a decent, but not amazing shave. The quality control is about as good as one might expect. After a few tentative weeks, I stopped using spray shaving cream and bought a Van Der Hagen brush, soap and bowl set. Unsurprisingly, shaving soap offers a much better experience than canned foam.
