  1. Andrew got his second college acceptance the other day. And another near-$20k merit grant! And his first acceptance, which was mistakenly Early Decision with $22k, is now a non-binding acceptance with $27k! It REALLY is too bad these are his #3 or #4 choices! Still waiting on #1 and #2 choices to come in. Think he'll get in to both no problem, hoping for decent merit $ from them, too; would be very pleasantly surprised if near the above.

  2. I never really liked cats, beyond the stray I lovingly called "Gizmo" back in the 80s, who moved on after a while. I also realized I was highly allergic to cats back then, and my son has been as well (he once petted a cat at his grandmother's house and his eye swelled shut for a while.) Fast forward a bit and there was a roaming neighborhood cat who the kids would see walking to/from school. They wound up getting attached and we wound up putting out food and water. Then it got cold and we started letting him in to eat. Then it got colder and he started hanging out inside a little more. Now he has a couple types of food, a litter box, and has his choice of places to sleep if he feels like hanging out. As we are fans of Scrubs, he has Ben donned "John-Dorian." **BRENT**

  3. Didn't need a pain pill last night, though because of that I think I needed a deeper toilet this morning. TMI? I'm starting to see some healing happening too. Less blood on the gauze every time I change dressings. The part with no skin seems to be filling in and scabbing over, so that's good news. BTW, Back in 80' when I started college the US had a nice grant called the BEOG (Basic Educational Opportunity Grant). As my parents had no money to help with college, and I had no money myself, I qualified for full tuition and extra for books and such. I never had to take out a loan. Oh, the good ol' days.

  5. Seriously, this cannot be understated. I'm the only of my siblings to not go to an ivy but I'm also the most financially stable, thanks largely to the fact that I graduated debt free. My older brother and younger sister both graduated with mid-level debt (for the time, some 20yrs ago) and while they both do well for themselves I've had a whole lot less financial stress in my life.

  8. yep, upsampling. plus if you are going to keep the original samples you need higher resolution to extrapolate the pieces in between. so at least 20 bits. one of the main reasons is filtering. for 16/44, you really need a multi pole output filter to prevent aliasing, and all the analog filters that have been used in the past have significant phase shift among other issues. so you bump it up to some very high frequency, then a simple single pole filter way outside the audio band, say 100khz. then no phase shift at all in the audio band. and you make perfect discrete high power pure class A switches.

  9. Look who I found at my hotel: That good creature is really kind and helpful to me. The other is the owner of the armchair and the whole street. And pretty badass.

  10. I ended up playing it twice through... for me this is unquestionably the best album they've made. And it was pretty well recorded to boot, demo-worthy for a metal album I'd say.

  17. found this gem on lampizator website •DHT triodes in single ended anode follower configuration as Lampizator signal tubes (45 or 2A3 or 101D) really? i did not know that tubes worked that way. And something he does not say for the SE units, they invert phase. for the calculated power and voltage levels depending on the tube, 5% thd second harmonic. 275V top of plate resistors, 130V on the plate, 55 volts on the cathode. Not a lot of room to work with with this gain.

  19. Anyone willing to assist in picking up and shipping a set of speakers located in Lafayette (just outside Walnut Creek)? They are average two-piece tower speakers that should fit easily in most SUV/Truck/Van. I will pay for your time and shipping/packing at a local UPS store. Shot me a PM and I can forward more details.

  25. Nice link! I would agree DSD does make less sense for recording and/or storage, and that it's probably in playback there may be differences (i.e. what Kevin said earlier about easier, phase preserving filter implementation for DSD). Jussi Laako who is the guy programming HQplayer says this in the manual: "Some of the more affordable sound cards and D/A converters have suboptimal digital and analogue filters, while still having support for higher sampling rates. Effects of this can be reduced by applying high quality upsampling in software before feeding the signal to the audio hardware at a higher rate. This moves some of the artifacts of the suboptimal hardware to higher frequencies, away from the audible band". "Most modern D/A converters are of the delta-sigma type. Built in delta-sigma modulator of HQ-player allows using DSD-capable converters with this native data format, in many cases bypassing a lot of DSP processing in these converters and allowing a more direct data path to the conversion stage". Since I hear a difference, I guess my hardware just is not up to standard

  26. I thought that most preferred the sound of PCM to DSD? I guess I haven't followed this (obviously) over the last few years, but what is the fuss over high rate DSD?

  27. Andreas Koch apparently does everything with FPGAs, including the 1 bit DACs. To play devil's advocate, the argument against true 1 bit DSD seems to be evident based on what the manufacturers are churning out these days. The ubiquitous ES9018 DS chip tries to improve upon true 1 bit using 64 (6-bit) equal-weighted 1-bit converters, so it ends up kind of being a hybrid. Read this for more info: https://benchmarkmedia.com/blogs/application_notes/inside-the-dac2-part-2-digital-processing Moral of the story is it's very hard to get 20+ bit accuracy even with the most state-of-the-art manufacturing processes available, so there is not much hope for these discrete designs coming out of the woodworks. The discrete R-2R stuff no doubt measures worse, but for whatever reason some people like the R2R sound more than DS. The fact that there's all these crock pot Lampizator goons out there doesn't really give a ringing endorsement to these DACs, though.

  28. listening / measuring again. on startup the outputs are positive, which is safe, good. I added a fan to my heatsink plate, lowered temp = lower bias. on start bias is ~13ma and climbs as it warms up. if my fan lets it. which may be why offset is different today. and also running on mains instead of variac. rails at +-394v, outputs to ground are all positive, 10v and under. no adjustment needed here. I call this a Big Win Its to cold to feed ducks, glad I made this. Thanks

  39. Did an update the forum software today biggest noticeable change is the 'Leaderboard' tab shows users with top posts and the most popular content. I believe it's to help increase discover ability or something. The other major change is that the site is now completely served over HTTPS. This includes embedded content and images. For most services it'll automatically pull in from HTTPS url's if the service supports it. If the content can't be pulled from HTTPS the forum software will download the content and serve it via an internal proxy script. Main reason for the later is to avoid browsers mixed-content warnings.

  40. There are few kinks on the page. I have requested the point out more clearly what the winner gets. It's at the very bottom and not clear. I also asked them to make sure they have a way to assign a ticket number for each one purchased. I'm hoping to have this worked out today. As most of you know, this is especially important for me because of my son. He is, hopefully, a couple of months away from graduating from SOF combat medic school and will have at least another year before he is deployed and he will be deployed. We lost 6 SF soldiers in a matter of a few days last month, most on deployment and one in training down in Key West. When you hear boots on the ground in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, it is likely an SF soldier and/or other SOF soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen. The GBF is a good organization which sometimes is as silent as the soldiers they serve which means not many even know it exists. So, thanks in advance for helping!
