  3. I entered a scoring competition put on by Spitfire Audio and HBO. They made a clip (without any music) from this seasons Westworld available, I imported it into Logic and it was off to the races. It took a couple of weeks to create my entry and win or loose, I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience.

  11. Now this is an odd one. David Dees, absolutely batshit insane conspiracy theorist and Photoshop artist died at 62. Dude was off his trolley by the standards of conspiracy theorists. He was imbalanced compared to the guy shouting on a street corner. He made Ted Kaczynski and Ben Garrison look like rational actors: https://www.ddees.com/ The art of Dees is so insane that it represents Poe's Law in full. ` Here's the thing: Dees' art actually was art. The dude had a great deal of technical skill and a distinctive style. His works are like a rabbit hole of carefully crafted insanity. You look too long and you can feel your own sanity wearing away.

  12. Serious suggestion - you should have the two white guys building company build an outdoor kitchen with integrated gas grill, flat cooktop, and stuff like storage drawers, etc. I mean having some cart-based solution seems rather plebeian at this stage, no?

  13. I accept no responsibility for any mental anguish caused by watching season 3 of WW. I agree with the others who panned it in the WestWorld thread. Nevertheless, I can't thank the folks at HBO enough for allowing the use of their property for the good of the composing community.

  14. Gyms here finally opened on Monday. I had cases everyday until today so I'm finally back after 3 months. Peak strength is not as bad as I would have thought but rep to rep and set to set endurance is a real struggle. Was really hoping that it would be less busy because people would be scared to come in.. Noop, so much Noop on that. Just as many as assholes in here at 1030am as pre covid. Now the 2 to 3 month grind to recover losses begins.

  16. Two suggestions: 1. clean the solder flux on both side of the boards. 2. check to see all parts, especially the sands are the correct ones and inserted correctly.

  17. From the schematic I have, the 500K resistors are from the inputs to ground, so would be in parallel with the volume pot. See if that value changes as you move the pot from 0 volume to full. That said, measuring resistors in circuit will give you sometimes strange results as you don't know the exact interactions with connected components. Also, ohming out resistors for what is suspected to be a leakage problem won't really tell you anything. Can you post detailed pics of the amp boards? Are the resistors lifted off of the board, or installed right on the surface? And what is the origin of this KGSSHV? i.e. who built it?

  20. Thanks! I like it too but I find it easy to fall in love with stuff I put a lot of work on. I heard that there are over 1000 entries! The final judging is done by J.J Abrams, Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy (series creator), and Ramin Djawadi.

  26. The road biking is very popular in Reno. We have elevation and a lot of nice places for riding. It is not for me though, I will stick to things with motors. We actually cooled of here today and will still only be in the 70s tomorrow so back out onto the dirt bike. I don't know why I ride this trail. I wouldn't call it fun, but you do feel accomplished when you complete it.

  30. Yep, don't overthink it. Any Stax system you get will reset your thinking of what good sound is. All these reports about the vast differences between different gear are from people who are very intimate with the sound of the different gear. Very small differences can sound huge when you have trained your ears to critical listening. Add to that your own personal preferences, and you have a real bunfight. The best advice in your journey to the balance of sound vs cost is to take things slowly and take time to smell the sonic flowers....

  31. As many of you know, I for one have stopped releasing all new designs for a few years now after I got fed up with people building crap and claiming it was somehow connected to Kevin or I. Now this also means I don't release the PCB's for many of the older projects as I want to change something and often... make them smaller. So this hasn't stopped people selling crap with our circuits but at least they don't get any of the updates. Now here is an amp I saw come up for sale in Japan a while ago. The new owner contacted Kevin to try and trouble shoot it but yeah, we don't offer any real help with these things. Something about the PSU did peak my interest so when it popped up again for sale for not a whole lot of money, I snapped it up. So here it is: Standard KGSSHV here with some version of the offboard PCB's but the build... it is just so bad. All the wires are the same color which is just nuts. Also just cheap PVC China wire and I'll check if it is actually real copper in there. Here are some of my favorites: Support the sinks properly... that is for suckers. Also I don't know why the volume extender is wrapped in Kapton tape... The amp shipped like this, the sinks are just attached by the components. It takes no for to bend them like that. I think this is some form of the GRLV but shit is is cheaply made. Transformer wires thinner than 24AWG... yeah pure quality there. Terminal blocks clearly cost too much but stuff like this at +580V can arc over. Last but not least, no repairs are possible.... What I find truly fascinating about this thing is the PSU board as... well... they cloned my smaller KGSSHV design. That one was never released into the wild but I have posted plenty of high res pics of both sides and they seem to have made a new board from those. See this: Now all the written markings or most of them, look real. What is not real are all the part numbers as Rxx or Cxx is not a system we use. The packages are all also a bit wrong so the board is clearly a clone. I'll dig it out and post some pics next to the real thing. More coming as I strip it down.

  32. Here is another one. I know its different because the caps on top are different. And its 1oz copper.

  33. ...wait, there is more!! I woke up early so what better than strip this shit down. First off was to remove the transformer and I found this: Notice the wire coming off the IEC and into the end of the fuse holder...and another wire connected to that pad? Yeah... I don't see any evidence that there had ever been any solder on that end of the fuse holder and the insert which holds the fuse is indeed missing. That would explain why, when the PSU blew it left this mark on the chassis At least the IEC input is nice... Gotta have that gold plating. I also don't understand how anybody could put "copyright" on this PCB with a straight face: It's two traces between two terminal blocks... ok. Now the real price, lifting the amplifier boards: Notice the nice line of standoffs...yeah not connected to anything: The heatsinks just sat on them, not connected in any way. So this thing has been shipped and the only thing securing the sinks are the transistor legs!! Spoiler alert but what could possibly happen... So 3 screws hold the amplifier boards to the chassis but no lock washers anywhere and everything was loose. What a great way to support some of the heaviest objects in the amp.

  35. The 727 is only pretty bad in comparison to other amps so if you don't do that...you are ok. For me the biggest issue is the lack of engagement and excitement from the amp. It's just so dull and lifeless stock. See here is the usual crap with every new electrostat, they are always world beaters. The first impressions are always "best evah" but it never holds any water. The HE Audio stuff was great...nope it was horrible. The King Sound showed up Stax...nope...far from it really unless they were showing Stax how things should not be done? Now the Mr. Speakers Voce, read the meet impressions and they are stunning!! Talk to people who know something about electrostatics and they pretty much horrible. I just wish somebody would just take a set of the best 'stats out there and actually try to improve them without all the BS. Here's the rub though, for something so simple they are fucking hard to get right. As for the driver size, who on earth thinks that a larger driver is better? Sure the Stax SR-1 drivers were way too small but anything larger than the 009's has very dubious qualities. How is the driver supported, how do you deal with the internal vibrations of the driver, how much does it flex etc. A smaller driver will always outperform a larger flimsy driver...
