  1. Like I'm sure all of you, my favorite memories of this hobby are all people-oriented, with headphone-related gear just excuse to get together, but my favorite headphone memories, sometimes with people whose names I no longer remember, are almost all early and Sennheiser-related. Those first Grado v. Sennheiser online debates, showing up to a meet with a pair of CD3000s when everyone else had HD580/600s, blind-testing after-market cables I couldn't then really afford over drinks, starting to understand just how much Senns could grow with a... Singlepower amp, the first time time I was in a room with two Orpheuses, etc. Due to a couple reasons, I've ended up with three new pairs of [Mass]Drop Sennheisers over the last year. Sometimes during work I end up with one on my head and another around my neck. They're so cheap now they can be applied almost everywhere. They get more use than my HD800s. And I will probably pick up a replacement HD-25 II when I return to the office. Which is all to say I hope they stick around in some form. If not, I'd miss them much more than nearly any other brand. Just went back and read... https://www.stereophile.com/headphones/1294senn/

  7. Well, the Festool track worked well for the plywood cuts, but the fence is a bit tall so I it comes down to making several cuts on the table saw or the router table for this top mounted track. Seems to me like going up a 1/4” at a time should be manageable on the router table. Oh, also added my sidearm and marking dagger to the apronlet this morning. Shit is getting serious up in here.

  10. Speaking of [Mass]Drop and Sennheiser, looks like they might do a version of the HD800S: https://drop.com/buy/our-most-requested-headphone-launching-2-18-21/talk?

  12. Made the mistake of trying to work my way up to 3/8” on the first one to make sure I did not big it down and my failures in fractions left the rail just below the surface. Just did the full 3/8 on the second one and it is perfect. Not sure if I need a 1/16”ish shim under the first one or not.

  15. I'm the opposite - with power tools*, I prefer to take the work to the tool whenever possible. But Nate is correct that downward pressure (and a very flat work piece) are necessary, as are the necessary safety precautions. I don't think either is correct, just what you are comfortable with, and what your tools will allow. * really, you should probably use a plow plane for this ...

  25. Indeed. I suspect Sennheiser was aware of its own financial position before authorizing the drop models. They probably had been neither manufacturing nor selling many of those models for years.

  26. I have my doubts .... think that the HD600 / 650 were already very old models and were amortized by Senn. Drop has given them a second youth. They have been in the catalog since the origin of MassDrop and have never disappeared. In fact, Drop continue to sell hundreds. If I´m not mistaken 59.3K for HD58X and 122.3K for HD6XX... that's a lot of headphones for such a minority market. Although perhaps, the issue of trade margins might be debatable, they still have factories in Ireland or Germany ... while other manufacturers have migrated their production to China. I already have a lot of headphones, but my favorite after the SR007 is still the "modest" hd600 over other most expensive models.

  27. I wonder if the Drop HD58X & HD6XX ended up hurting them? No doubt they are hugely successful products for Drop but how much did they help Senn's bottom line? I can't imagine they sold many 580/600/650's after those came out. I think the 800/800S were successful for them but they have alot more competition at that end of the market these days. It also probably didn't help that both the 660S and 820 were largely failures and not very well regarded.

  28. I'd be ok if Sennheiser streamlined down to pro/audiophile-centric models (HD25/280/600/650/800S/820), selling them accordingly, & offloaded consumer models (read: HD59x, cheaper earbuds, wireless, etc.)

  34. Brands come and go. I've been around long enough to see the demise and reprise of vinyl. Audiophile headphones are a relatively new market through my eyes. And IMO they've oversaturated the market with too many brands. Someone had to fall victim.

  35. Can someone politely suggest they sell off the soundbar business to fund the headphone business?
    1 point
  36. So they focus on pro audio, and most likely roll all the liabilities into the consumer market side before the sale. And the new outfit can't meet debt obligations and goes belly up. Seems to be a standard business trick of the modern world. That's what the fortune 500 company I used to work for did. Not a good sign for consumer products.

  37. Robert Caro - The Path to Power What can I say? Best book on politics I've ever read. Maybe best book on history I've ever read. There are certain books that I know if I see them on someone's shelf that we will get along instantly. Caro is a national treasure. This is so well written and so meticulously researched. It is a 1,000 page monster but it goes down smooth because the history, cast of characters, setting and Caro's prose are so compelling. The first book is less a strict biography of LBJ but more a history and study of America in the beginning of the 20th century with LBJ as a the central character. Texas politics, the Hill Country, the Great Depression and the New Deal all are described so brilliantly. I hope to finish the other 3 volumes this year. There is a chapter in the book about the daily hardships of rural America pre-electrification that is just an absolute knockout and can be read on its own as a great piece of non-fiction.

  44. "Sennheiser announced on Tuesday it’s looking for a new partner to buy its consumer audio business, which consists of headphones and soundbars. It’s going to shift its focus entirely to professional audio, including its Neumann microphone division and what Sennheiser calls business communications." Source: https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/16/22285497/sennheiser-investors-selling-consumer-headphones-soundbars-business This is pretty sad. Makes sense why Axel Grell left now. We haven't seen any really new high-end product from them since the HD-820, and it sounds like we shouldn't expect anything else to be forthcoming. The HD600/650 and HD800/S are my two favorite headphones. I don't think they are going away any time soon, but I doubt Senn is investing heavily in any successor models.
