And we're back to individual preferences again. Swapping back and forth between the Utopias/GS-X MkII and 007/BHSE running off the same source, I liked the Staxen better. Quelle surprise.7 points

I had a listen today to the Focal Utopias in quite room along with the HD800s for comparison using an unfamiliar Simaudio Moon 430HAD. The Utopias are amazingly good, very impressed, I dug them a fair amount more than the HD800 in that particular set-up. I’m going to shuffle a bit of gear and pick up one in the next week or so.7 points

Glad to hear it. Also, now's an opportunity to upgrade tires. I'll have to replace mine this year at some point (40k on the stockers) and have been struggling mightily given how few, basically zero, miles of trails my Jeep is likely to see. On a personal note - I met with the local Home Theater install company today to talk about the addition. Progress has been lagging horribly but it's coming up on the time to get things wired and given what I was quoted to have the shop guys do it I'll be having someone wire all of it for me. It was shockingly low.5 points

Chanel will not arrive for probably 3 weeks, they said 8-10 days to get to them before even shipping it from Switzerland/Italy. We'll get the pics when it arrives. Crappy phone picture: Got it sized no problem though I may have put a microscratch on the side of one or more of the spare links. Plan to wear it a lot so I'm not going to worry about it. Tried to post a video of it running with the second hand sweeping but Tapatalk wasn't cooperating. Lume shot:4 points

Yup. The main consideration (well as far as I was concerned!) in buying where we have lived for the last 20 years was the listening room. It is actually the lounge, but was 6m x 4m with a concrete floor. So I have the luxury of siting dipole speakers 1.6 metres from the end wall. And I have a listening seat that I pull out and put in the sweet spot. Bliss.4 points

I listened to the Mojo at a local headphone specialist shop and I was blown away. We hooked the Mojo up to my Panasonic SL-CT820 portable CD player using an optical cable listening out of the Beyerdynamic Amiron headphone and I had that Eureka! moment... the Mojo was immediately, obviously better than the PCDP's output in every audible dimension. I'll buy one as soon as I'm able to afford one.3 points

Stupid rims don't have enough space around the lug for a traditional lug extractor. Had to go with a sacrificial socket. Rescue successful3 points

I've never had problems reworking 1oz boards (several cycles) if they are quality fab boards. 2oz is probably better though I don't know if 2oz is bonded to the substrate any better than 1oz is. I guess the additional copper must have some effect. Today's boards are a far cry from some of the '80s shit, where traces would lift if you looked cross-eyed at them Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Just shoved a day's worth of Larry Coryell into my Tidal queue. I don't like everything he does, but when I do like it, I love it. Of the top 6 albums that AMG listed, they were missing two (Monk, 'Trane, Miles & Me and one with Emily Remler, Together).2 points

Birgir meets Justin in the US. Justin: Here's the SR-009's you wanted to see that are awaiting repairs... Birgir: Seen 'em, not impressed. Birgir walks away........2 points

Wait to you hear them on a better amp. I think that's the amp I first heard them on and I was pretty underwhelmed. Then on the L-2 it was a whole different ball game.2 points

We are shit out of luck on the old parts though I believe Stax has a lot of that stuff still in stock or it could be made in small quantities easily. I mean how hard would it be to make 300 normal bias Lambda cables which are 95% the same as the 207 cable? The problem with something like this is knowing the older models well enough to supply people with the stuff they need. The distributors fuck up the current lineup when it comes to parts so I have little hope for them knowing a Gamma cable from a SR-5N cable. I've toyed with the idea for so long to import Stax into Iceland but I doubt they would want their biggest critic anywhere near this. Still they could make a nice amount of money servicing the old units with minimal outlay... Ohh and thanks for that Justin. Did you ever get those 009's fixed after the NYC meet? I could take a look at them when I'm in the US next month...2 points

We've been selling the full product line for years, plus extension cables. We didn't have access to parts except maybe ear pads...but dealer cost was still more expensive than buying the pads from Japan, so it made no sense. I believe repairs might get sent back to Japan now2 points

Thanks! Hadn't done any veneering since 2013, so i had to redo all the mistakes i had previously learned to avoid - still turned out pretty good though. I even infused it with several liters of blood from over enthusiastic knife-handling, just to bring out that subtle reddish hue in the wood...1 point

Yeah I bought it in undergrad and when we moved into this house there was a weird switch controlled plug in the master. It ended up there because it fit. I think we've used it 4 times in 2 years and 2 of those times were to explain what it was to the kids. Your mentioning it reminded me of the uselessness of having it out. Just retired it and bought a Tiffany style lamp to go there:1 point

I don't know if anyone else here is into SBTRKT but the primary vocalist he's worked with for years released a new solo album. Good as expected, so far. Sampha - Process1 point

I agree, which is kind of sad seeing how optimistic i was for the hobby when audeze started developing their first headphone, and everyone was hopping on the orthodynamic hype train. There's still plenty of cheap orthos on ebay, but i guess part of the fun was actually unearthing and documenting all the obscure and forgotten phones nobody knew anything about, like PMB's, MB Quart's and weird Amfiton's. Not to mention putting SFI tweeters in all kinds of ugly donor-phones, hand-sewing custom ear pads and trading felt across the world with other users (like kabeer, ludoo, smeggy and ericj.) Those really were fun times.1 point
