New headphones: do want. Problems: I'm still studying Java at UW. It comsumes about 95% of my free time so regular headphone listening just doesn't happen unless I get spare time at work, which is also rare. I'll be done in June, though. I'm thinking of three possibilities: ATH-ESW9 Good: Good form factor for work, seem to respond reasonably well to amps. Bad: Would I use them outside of work? RS2i Good: Enjoyed these when hearing the RS2 a year or so back. Would be a nice 32ohm phone for use with the Ventus or future suitable amps. Might be nice to have for a work rig, albeit maybe a little overkill. Bad: Maybe a little pricy for leaving at work…

Need suggestions for new headphones to look into with the following criteria. - Under $80 - Decent sound - Decent construction, ie. able to take some in bag abuse - Closed design - Not insanely large I'm a big fan of Grado's and use them at home, but the open design doesnt work well in a loud train. Don't ban me, please! My girlfriend has a portable DVD player that is pretty much useless when we are traveling on the interstate, because the volume doesn't get loud enough to overcome the road noise. We haven't used it on a plane yet but I imagine the situation would be similar. I have zero experience with noise canceling phones, but I'm thinking they may be what we need in this situation. I already suggested IEMs, but she doesn't want to have to jam something in her ear. Budget like $100-200, cheaper the better. She wants circumnaural phones. Comfort is a top priority, and movies are the primary medium, but I'd still like something that is at least respectable so…

From what I can tell there are two main competing companies when it comes to in-ear monitors: Sennheiser and Shure. I'm looking to drop between $200 and $400 on some nice in-ear monitors and wanted to make sure I get the best bang for my buck. I've checked out a few local music stores for information on in-ear monitors but none of their audio experts have too much experience with them and referred me to some online sources. My main use for the monitors at the moment would be for listening to music; however I do have an electric drum kit and plan to do some recording (with the kit and other instruments) in the near future. Recently I borrowed HD580 (NOS) from my friend. I hook it up to the meager Glite and Pico DAC. The more I listen to it, the more I prefer it to my KGSS/O2 Mk2+Stello. I have to admit that I'm the stat mafia ever since I left dynamic. Picked these up at a good price last month over on HF. Kind of a random purchase, but Grado cans hold a unique mystique for me, quite unlike any other company in the market. I have no idea why. Maybe its because of that first experience I had with the RS-1/PPX3/Modwright 999ES/MFSL Ryan Adams "Heart Breaker" SACD combo: it was the first time I felt like I was really listening to what I then understood to be "hi-fi" sound. I'm looking for some good, cool looking over-ear headphones to get. OK - putting the neck on the chopping block here! I have the SRD-7 with the Spritzer Professional bias board, so, in effect, an SRD-7 Pro. Love the sound with the Sigma/404 and driven by a Studer A68. The bottom end is nicely in control (as Birgir has said happens with upscale amplification ala Blue Hawaii SE or that ilk), and there is more of the power that these earspeakers have in spades. They seem to convey the "oomph" of the performance much better than any other Stax I've heard. Although the Lambda Nova Signature/SRM-Monitor is probably more technically neutral, this combination seems to get a natural sound out of most recordings, just as Naotake Hayashi mentioned.…

I recently fell into a deal on Grado sr-100's that I couldn't pass up. No, not the HP drivers. They appear to be pink,white lettering plastic grill. Either way, they seem to sound better than other Grado's I've had around here. Not up to the Stax sound, but pretty good with a Millet minimax. Either way, $30 well spent.

Hello, I would like to ask for your help in selecting my new set of phones. The characteristics they should have are: To be comfortable (this might be very subjective, I know, but give me you opinion) as I will use the for long periods of time; To be durable (cables and specially connections should be resistant) as I am not the best owner for my gear; To be noise insulating (I will use them to be able to focus while working in busy places); To be portable. It's long overdue, but I finally decided to go and figure out exactly how the filter PCB in the K1000 affects the sound. As has already been established, it is a low Q notch filter in the treble region, with a noticeable effect on the sound. It consists of an inductor, a resistor and a capacitor in parallel with each other, and the filter is in series with the driver. The values I measured were 7.1mH, 88.9R and 0.168uF. The resistor markings clearly show it as an 88.7R 1% resistor, but the other two would require assumptions towards their nominal value. Simulating the filter based on a 120 ohm impedance gave results that conflicted with the measurements I took of the K…

I have a pair of Stax SR Omega headphones (serial number 00199). These are still the best headphones I have ever heard. This is an old set which has stood the test of time. I continue to use them as a reference during my mixes. The head bow broke in two places near the top and middle. From a factory authorized repair shop I purchased the last head bow they had two years ago. They came from another model. I need to find a suitable replacement. I am not afraid to make modifications to the support system. Any Ideas?

Hi, I've spent the last week or so reading numerous reviews/forums for headphones and amps as I would very much like to upgrade from my current setup. Currently my headphones are some ath a700's that are falling apart. I don't own an amp or dac yet and the sound card I use is an x-fi titanium card I got for free from a friend of mine about a year ago. Future upgrades are certainly possible, but for the moment my budget is around $400-500. But this is flexible. I am new to this, especially in experience with different setups. I've been into mid hi-fi the last few years. I used to think my Logitech Z-5500's were the best things on the planet. Now, that I've gotten into decent headphones, I know the difference. Would it be a fair assessment to say that cheap / entry level headphones turn everything into a blended / muddy mess? I've found with going up a little bit in the scale of equipment that my music listening experience has greatly increased, mainly because the you can pick out where the sounds come from, and it's separation etc. (as opposed to a grinded blend of sound) How do you explain this to a friend that rocks ipod buds?
