Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by enos,

Hello everyone, This is my very first post in this forum I discovered very recently, and I can see many of you already do post on head-fi. My nickname on head-fi is Shamu144 if you need any reference, though I am not a very active member there. As introduction background, I can say I have some experiences with the electrostat sound (I own a SR-303) and dynamic sound (DT880, HD650 and K501). I was very pleased with my SR-303 powered by a Manley Stingray integrated amp, through an Illusion ESC-1001 adaptater box (I see many of you use SRD7). I decided however to downgrade my system for reasons too long to explain now, and ended up with a balanced amp that proba…

  2. Started by JimP,

Piss me off...I notice the sleeving on my Zu (Senn) cable has frayed/detached from the underlying cable (4-pin XLR termination). My own fault as I've been using the HD650-Zu quite actively these days as I've been using headphones a lot lately (with the Leben and LDVI). Is there (a) a simple way to fix this, or ( ghetto wrap it with duct or electrical tape? No, I'm not going to get a replacement, I'm pretty content with the Zu + Senn. [mods, pls move if its in wrong forum, not sure where to post this]

  5. Started by laxx,

I know some of you guys are very happy with your UE 10's and 11's, but those are well beyond my budget, and I don't think I'll ever be willing to spend that much. So I've been thinking these days about giving a custom pair of IEMs a shot. I don't know what kind of exposure HC has compared to HF, but I figured I'd ask here first. Of the customs that are moderately priced, I only know of the LiveWires and the FreqShow (their highest model??). I know there's the UE 5 also, but I don't remember hearing much talk about them as everyone seems to just get the 10/11's. hMm.. I listen to everything, so I'm looking for a good all arounder. As for headphones, I own a pair …

  6. Started by MrSlacker,

So my ER-6i broke for the 3rd fucking time and I have had enough! I am looking for some IEMs to use on the train unamped. Budget is around $100-$150 because I honestly don't really care how good my music sounds when I am in NYC metro... My 6i lacked a bit of bass, but other than that, they got the job done. IEMs is something I would prefer to buy new, so keep that in mind. Looking for any suggestions and ideas. Thanks

I must not be paying attention because this is the first I've heard of these Etymotic Research, Inc. - hf5? Earphones Anyone heard these?

  8. Started by humanflyz,

I found out today that the wiring on the right earpiece of my SE530 is loose, so that whenever I move, the signal cuts out. Fortunately they are still under warranty, so I sent them in for Shure to repair. My question is: what could have caused the wiring to be loose in the first place, so I can prevent this from happening in the future. I have been running with them on the treadmill everyday for the past two months, so is it that? And if it is, color me disappointed, because I thought the build quality should be able to withstand running.

  10. I was asking this before, not here, but I do not have that impression that these were ever tried by somebody. As far as I know you can not buy them in Europe or U.S.A., but in Russia is no problem. When they came out, like year ago, they were like USD 250-300 and now you can get them for like USD 140. So, the question is, anybody who can share? I am not looking for an review, cos I have seen them, just need "inside" information, if you know what I am talking about, someone from community... THX

  11. Huhumm, I thought I would never say that but I guess it's time I'd expand my vision. I am, at times, getting tired of the sucked out midrange which makes me feel like eq-ing buy I don't want that. When I walked home today I listened to Paranoid Android of Radiohead and I got scared of the hollownesss to the sound. I can't seem to listen around it anymore. I noticed the sucked out midrange long before and got the hollowness at times too but it was not noticable with all music and mood depending so I thought it was more me or the recording than the hps. I know some people described those same issues with the 750s but I rather tend to wait till I find it out myself. The …

I just picked up a pair of these and would be interested in hearing from fans/owners here. They have a very lush sound but I'm finding them a bit muffled at the frequency extremes compared to RS1s and balanced HD650s. I'd be grateful for any suggestions on amping these (I have a Headroom balanced desktop amp) that might clear up the congestion, since I'd really like to like these phones even more. But maybe that's just how these vintage phones sound? Source is the HR's built-in DAC and a Primare CDP. thanks and best, k

  14. Started by Chekhonte,

I came into some money recently and I'm considering the purchase of a pair of RS1's. My currently favorite headphone is the MS2i. I live in a town where I can't audition them with out traveling around an hour and a half which I don't want to do. In your opinion do you think I'll benefit from this upgrade?

  15. Started by jinp6301,

When I went to bozebuttons's house for a mini-meet, I got to spend a lot of time with the high end grados (the vintage RS-1 and the HP-1/2/3 especially) and I realized that the 225s doesn't have the sound that I want nor can it scale the same way that the other two phones can. So, I'm trying to get less shrill treble, a more fuller sound (esp in the low end) with better extension in the lows and a slightly bigger soundstage that keeps the grado sound. Does that sound like the MS-2i's? PS. and my 225s are woodied, which does fix the problem (with the bass and the soundstage) a small amount but not enough to my liking.

It's a Swedish film about audiophiles with a guest appearance from a unique headphone. They turn up about 30 seconds in. A small teaser...

  17. Started by JBLoudG20,

Has anybody seen these? I kinda doubt it, but figured I'd ask. Something about them has been calling me for a while, now. They are 'studio' phones according to AT. 18. Can anyone tell me which earpad is the best one for grado ps1? bowl one, flat one, or the earpad of GS1000, or anything else you think it is the best In addition, can you also tell me which amplifier is good for the phone? thanks for your time to help me

  19. I quickly browsed through an article about headphone measurements in this month's Stereophile. It's worth a look.

  20. Started by bhjazz,

Yup. Right outtta the box. WTF? I was prepared to jump into a pair of SR-325i's, but after listening to them compared to the RS-2, I opted to upgrade. The RS-2 just sounded smoother and much more musical and relaxed. The demo pair was nice with not alot of hours, so I knew the sound would only get better. I paid my bill and brought home a sealed box. Hoo-yeah! After an hour, I heard the first stage of break in pass by...waitaminute....really? Yes, the sound had a very obvious change and I had to review the last few tunes to really believe it. Cool. Then I started listening more critically. It was then that I started fiddling with the balance. I slid t…

  21. Started by ilikebananafudge,

I got a question (or a few...). Would buying a pair of SR60s be a good way to see if I liked the Grado 'sound' so to speak? Also, would it be a good way to tell if Grado headphones were comfortable for me or not? Or are all the lines of Grado cans different?

  22. Started by aardvark baguette,

I'm enjoying my e.530s recently, which has got me thinking about Ultimate Ears customs (UE10 and UE11) again. Has anyone heard both?

  23. Started by n_maher,

Well, this document would at least seem to suggest that some of the rumors that I have been hearing over the past 6 months are true. From what I've heard the rumored street price in the US is ~$1000. There's also a thread on Head-Fi about this, but I don't think there's much in the way of additional information there, just a couple of new pictures.

  24. Started by Dusty Chalk,

Are there any ribbon based headphones? I found this -- anyone know if anything came of this (yes, I have already emailed them, they haven't had a chance to respond yet)? I also found this thread on DIY Audio, but...well, you read it...

Anyone heard these things? I have some 9's, which even with all their coloration and funky bass, can sound good at times (with my EAR HP4 or Raptor). I put in a bid on an auction not thinking I would have a chance to win, and now I may.
