I asked my thunderbird to sync up to folders already on the webmail server (just started using it for uni email addy). And the sub folders which I had already created inside the thunderbird inbox vanished, replaced by the server synced folders. (I had assumed they would be added on to, not supercede). The emails in those previous folders were not returned to the main inbox, although everything in the main inbox remains the same. Nor were they moved to the deleted items bin. They've simply vanished. They're not on the main server via the website either so I can't redownload them. Obviously putting them in folders in thunderbird killed them on the server which fucks my w…

I've been eyeing the slick all in one NAS boxes like QNAP TS-639. I wish it were able to do RAID 10, but I think I might just end up with two volumes (work stuff in RAID 1, media files in RAID 5). I really like the slick UI and ease of use. Of course it's not cheap. Otherwise, I could upgrade my old server. It's a Pentium M based mobo with an old 3Ware PATA 7410 RAID card with 4x 400GB Seagates in RAID 10. (OS is on the Mobo RAID 1 with 2x 2.5" drives) It's been pretty much rock solid reliable for years. Unfortunately, Windows 2000 as a server is a PITA to deal with, and not quite as rock solid as the hardware. I'm thinking of rebuilding it with adding a …

Is there a way to send a fax via the internet without having to sign up for a service (i.e., a one-time thing). Or, in the alternative, is there a super cheap way to do this? I don't have a fax machine and need to get something out.

My laptop is on its last dying breaths right now and it seems that I need a new laptop asap. Something under $500, 14" max screen size and should be able to run Adobe Illustrator decently. I would prefer to buy new/refurb so I could get the warranty. I've been looking at the lenovo outlet site and slickdeals. But is there anywhere else to look or does anyone have any suggestions?

A friend of mine just called me with an interesting wireless network problem he is about to have and asked for possible solutions. Currently, he's running a wireless Applenet network at home with an Airport Express as his wireless router, which connects to the cable modem. He runs WPA and he is the only user so his network is pretty much secure. He has several computers on the network which talk together plus he often goes out to the internet. The problem is that he's about to get a roommate who also wants to get out to the internet. This is OK, but he needs to be able to hide his computers and traffic from the new user. Simple enough, eh? Normally I would solv…

is out. I have it installed on this Mac laptop and my main Linux desktop. It seems faster, appears to use less memory and is more spritely all around. Plugins seem to work better on the Linux version. I haven't tried the proxy server feature. I'm happy to see that they've added a spell checker that works in vBulletin forms, like FireFox has had forever. I like that Speed Dial is now expandable to more than nine items and that I don't have to hold the mouse button down on menus on the Mandriva machine like it was an ancient Mac. (It's the little things that make me happy.) All the features that made me like the browser in the first place are still present and account…

I'm trying to get my squeezebox (v1) to play my personal Last.FM radio and it seems that the only way to do that is to get the stream url somehow. I've tried most methods that I've seen on the interwebz (squeezebox forums included) with no luck. If anyone sees a solution, I would love to know. EDIT: I know this can be done somehow since a foobar plug-in does it very well.

Have any of you downloaded it yet? It handles complex code really well and loads pages fast. I'm really liking it.

I'm contemplating an update for my PC. A new quad core/mobo/video card would comprise most of the updating, but new HDs and two new Blu-ray burners might be in the scope. That is if there's some reliable Blu-ray copying software available. I like the idea of making copies of my favorite Blu-ray movies. Anyone have any experience with Blu-ray copying yet?

Is it possible to rip HDCDs using iTunes such that you get the extra preciouss bitses? I understand that you can rip it as a regular CD, but HDCD is 20-bit, right? If iTunes can't do it, is there a way to rip HDCDs while preserving the "HD" portion? EDIT: Assume a Mac, but I also have a PC.

Just looking for a few suggestions on what sort of router I should go for, including brand, type (G, N, etc.), whatever else. I must be honest and say that networking is a weak point for me and I don't know a heck of a lot about routers in general, but I just need something for here at the apartment that will give me multiple ethernet ports and a solid wireless connection for my roommate's lappy. Thanks folks.

I have received a HP tablet PC from work. Which I don't have any use for work wise. My current laptop is a P-M 1.8 GHz with a gig of RAM running XP which is plenty fast for the research and patient software I need to run. And seeing how this was some how factored into the hospital/academic budget I'm free to do whatever I want with it. I think these are the specs: Genuine Windows Vista? Business (except it's coming loading with XP Pro) Windows Vista? capable*Windows Vista? Premium ready Intel? Core?2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage Processor (up to 1.2 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache) 1 x 1024MB DDR2 80 GB No optical device 12.1 Illumi-Lite WXGA (1280 x 800 resolution), UWVA, with…

currently looking at acer aspire one (aod250). can be had from sams club for $294. i dont HAVE to spend the above mentioned amount. also cant find any real information about the differences between the z-series chips and the n-series chips except for just a different in the bus speeds. anyone actually know more about them? requirements (things i would like to have) windows xp/linux (NO VISTA. under no conditions) < 3 lbs battery should hold charge for at least 2.5 hours. (heavier laptop is ok if battery lasts longer) fanless would be nice but active cooling is ok as long as its not too loud. color must be black. dont want a fingerprint magnet but if its che…

After waiting for the painfully slow download from MSDN I was able to install the RTM of Windows 7 (ultimate x64 version). I didn't have any blank dvd's around so I installed it from a usb thumb and I really think it's the way to go. The install only took 10-15 minutes. Some early thoughts on Windows 7, it's definitely snappier than Vista, especially when it comes to UI affects and such. I should mention that 7 had drivers for everything in my laptop which was nice. I like the new taskbar it's refined and the UI affects actually improve overall usability.

Anyone have any solutions for the eye fatigue that results from staring at an LCD all day? In the ad from buy.com today, one of the items was a $50 pair of glasses designed for exactly that, that I'm actually seriously considering. Also, there's an overlay that one can put over one's screen. Anyone use any of these things? Are there other options ("go blind" does not count -- I'd rather not) that you prefer?

So I'm trying to put in a clean copy of XP Media Center on my Mom's Acer laptop (her current installation is kinda jacked) and I can't figure out quite how to do it. I'm very familiar with putting together a PC and installing OS from scratch but my biggest challenge here is finding a XP Media Center disc without actually buying one. I still have the product key, it's on the sticker under the laptop. So the million dollar question is: how/where do I get/buy a Windows XP installation disc without the product key (which I already have)?
