Decided it was way too cold to do any work myself so I had the new saddle, pedals and tires put on at the shop. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk5 points

Port Talbot in Wales is home to a massive steelworks and docks, and has a current population of 30-odd thousand. It is not a particularly nice place, frankly. And includes Aberfan, where the coal spoil heap slid into a school 50 years ago killing 116 children and 28 adults. Yet from it has come a stream of first class actors: Bernard Fox Richard Burton Anthony Hopkins Michael Sheen No one has any idea why this is the case. But in any event - RIP Bernard Fox.5 points

I once got involved in a project for a superconducting gravity gradiometer, around 20 years ago. This was for the GOCE mission (Gravity and Ocean Circulation Explorer). Because the cryogens were the closest uncontrolled mass to the gradiometer, we had to constrain them. One of the design team came up with a cryogen cycle in which there was a solid hydrogen outer shield (which sublimed to space through a capillary, and what was left was held on a wire mesh) and a liquid helium inner vessel that cunningly moved around the phase diagram so it was always full - for the 1 year mission anyway. So no gas-liquid boundaries and uncontrolled motion. I presented this solution to ESA, and they were very unhappy about the solid hydrogen. I must admit I found that puzzling since it was sitting on top of a rocket with hundreds of tons of high explosive propellant in it. Fortunately we substituted solid neon, which worked just as well, but was substantially heavier.3 points

Xavier and I went out for a ~13 mile ride in the rain today with a buddy of mine who is testing out his new bike and wheels. Not sure if buddy's flash went off for this one or what, but man, this bike is gorgeous. **BRENT**2 points

Here are the schematics: I've got to look up the settings again for the positive rail. I'm running out in a bit so may need to do it later. EDIT: Ok so the silk screen should read 14.2V before you start bridging the jumpers. You should bridge 3P2V, 1P6V, 0P8V, 0P2V for a 20V output. Also, updated schematics to make them higher resolution.2 points

General rule of thumb is that liquid nitrogen is about the same price as milk, give or take, for about a gallon of each. Bulk price is much cheaper than milk.1 point

I'm guessing it's ramen and not raven...we don't catch much raven here in the Bay...1 point

Used LN2 many times in the past before in copper pots for overclocking CPU's. It is indeed awfully cheap compared to the prices of liquid helium.1 point

Yes, it was via i2s from my Sonore Signature Rendu, very nice streamer with no USB involved. The Holo may be a bit sweeter but that costs some detail and soundstage. I will say they are very close if volume matched, which is difficult since the output (vrms?) from the XLRs of the Holo and Yggy is different. I didn't try DSD and only listened in NOS mode. The Yggy was hooked up to the same source via spdif and i had a nice switch to go between the Holo and Yggy, only trouble was volume matching. I would most likely choose the Yggy between the two, especially since it's American made. The Holo is worth a listen. Would love to hear what you think numbers.1 point

Did you listen to the Holo from I2S just out of curiousity? I was thinking of heading over to the dac shootout in DC on Sunday. They are pitting the holo against the yggy and the codex.1 point

Ah, but it's special audiophile-grade hot glue. Very exclusive. Very expensive. But requires the very expensive audiophile electrons with a spin of 1.1 point

This would NOT stop any incompetent cable manufacturer...... That all depends on the individual's version and perception of sound improvement.... But, then again, If it costs buckets more, it's gotta be buckets better, right.... ????? And the name HIFI-Tuning.com - which verion of "Hi-Fi" is it, or can it be tuned to...? And, according to the symbol, it must be DC blocking, therefore directional. Must be some bypass cap to allow 50/60Hz through to fit in a fuse cartridge.1 point

note: liquid hydrogen is stupidly dangerous. besides which you are unlikely to get anyone to sell it to you. liquid nitrogen is better, and very cheap. been there, done that many times, no difference can be detected. cryo'd cables,cd's,tubes, flowers,bananas... liquid helium is even colder, and very expensive1 point

No, just sloppy writing. I don't really think he was taking Patrick seriously at all, I just couldn't figure out a better way to construct the sentence quickly. My apologies for not being clearer.1 point

Dusty, I think that your SRR (Sarcasm Recognition Radar) might need some maintenance.1 point

Temps warmed up to a balmy 18 degrees this morning so I decided to go out for a ride. New winter gloves and bibs are not in yet, nor are the pedals so not opportune but fun. Going to head out now to pick up some Dillinger 5 studded tires as these Specialized tires have zero grip when I hit all the tracks of previous bikes that have made slick grooves everywhere in and below the snow. Bike tried to slide out from under me quite often. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Had the Holo Spring on loan for the last week. It is quite good but I think the Yggdrasil is slightly better.1 point

build it, put it in a super fancy box, and sell it for $37k betcha it sounds better than the high priced spread, at least no stupidly expensive and useless input transformers. its a push pull amp, so it might actually sound a bit different. besides which its winter what the fuck else are you going to do.1 point
