Headphones

Suggestions for closed headphones Please~? I am looking for "airy*" sounding closed cans to use at work. I have heard the A900, 950LTD and did not quite like'em. I owned the L3K and liked them, but those are somewhat out of budget for this project. W5000 are maybe a possibility (although the last time I heard them was so long ago that my recollection may be completely wrong....). Any other closed cans that should be considered? I’m going to post this in its own thread as so many people are asking me for X9000 impressions, and it makes sense to have them somewhere where they are easy to find. I was also going to take some pictures to add to this review but I’m just wiped. Might add some later if these ever present storms let up for some good light. Well, I've had my first exposure to HD650s using push-pull amplification. I have to say, I'm stunned. I *hate* these headphones single ended, for reasons which I will list here. Their bass is loose and overwhelming; there is a very slight grain to their sound, which is more of a characteristic of most dynamic headphones in general to my ears (but not all); the highs are muffled and obscure the detail; the impulse response is slower than a Geo Metro; the tone is far too warm and there seems to be bass even where there shouldn't be. And I have no idea why Sennheiser decided to voice the HD650 this way - rather I can guess (more bass when underdriven), but I have no idea…

Anybody own these? $158 recable for a set of $25 cans. I'm not being skeptical or facetious, I really am curious on the differences.

While I am waiting for my HP's to be serviced, does anyone have any recommendations for something that can tide me over until then? Budget probably 200-300 as once the HP'1000's come in they will be taking full time. Would prefer not to go the hd650 route again as they just don't satisfy me musically regardless of the number of times I've had them and various rigs (about as much as the HP1000 actually). Definitely not into the k701. Thoughts are the allesandrom MS2i and audio technica ad2000 (i believe that is the model that a lot of people have been praising). I can sort of do the same thing already with my equalizer but a convolution based method would capture a lot more of the intricacies than my method would. EDIT 4/23: If you're just finding this thread, I've substantially revised my published blog review of the DT 770's after living with them a while, receiving comments from others, and comparing them to additional headphones. Many of my initial impressions still apply, but the DT 770's are less accurate than I first believed. Beyer has done a decent job of spicing up the sound to appeal to a broader range of customers while leaving much of the frequency spectrum relatively unscathed. So I've been thinking of getting RS-1 (again) and I'd love to grab a vintage pair, but I also know the chance of that happening is close to nil. With that in mind, has anyone heard the new button-less RS-1? I'm just curious if there are any differences in the sound with the re-design.

Dear Headphone audiophiles, I want to buy the best headphones for listening to metal music. I recently purchased sE electronics The EGG speakers with amplifier and have concluded that they have way too much bass. I was disappointed when I placed a AKG K240 headphone in my Focusrite Forte usb soundcard and heard tons of details in my favorite records that I had not previously heard. I love hearing all the tiny details the artists intended us to hear. My K701 came in Always curious about these, only encountered them very briefly in a meet. Unfortunately I haven't been able to listen to most of my reference discs since the audio PC I stream from is being completely rebuilt and I'm waiting for a power supply. I got these this afternoon, then went out for a bit, so I only have around 3-4 hours of head time on them. My HD580 drivers (at least one) are dead and so instead of getting new drivers and fixing the old/used cans (which seem to be at least missing foamy pieces), I am thinking of picking up an HD600 from Justin for the office. I like the clamp of the HD600/650 for one - the HD580 is a little loose for me especially since it is used and a little stretched out. Before I do, I was wondering if there is anything else out there that I should consider (I am guessing no). I like that the HD600 are laid back and fairly neutral and comfortable. I've been into mid hi-fi the last few years. I used to think my Logitech Z-5500's were the best things on the planet. Now, that I've gotten into decent headphones, I know the difference. Would it be a fair assessment to say that cheap / entry level headphones turn everything into a blended / muddy mess? I've found with going up a little bit in the scale of equipment that my music listening experience has greatly increased, mainly because the you can pick out where the sounds come from, and it's separation etc. (as opposed to a grinded blend of sound) How do you explain this to a friend that rocks ipod buds?

So I went with a friend see some speakers at the Hi.fi store and while doing our listening session the owner was always talking about this simulator device that he got but we continued to say "yeah yeah lets hear the speakers". At the end he convinced us to have a go and I could see how all smiley he was. Just wondering if anyone else caught the new design of the RS-2s on HF? Items of note: 1. No more endgrain - now done "Larry style" with sidegrain. Pretty weak in my opinion. 2. No more button. I'm sure this was a man'f/labor based decision, one less assembly step and one less thing for folks to bitch about/fall off. 3. New font. Not my cup of tea but I'd have to see it in person to know for sure.

My first impression of the K-701 was that it was an improvement over K-340, sounding much like what I suspect a modded K-340 would sound like. However, the longer I owned the K-701, the less I liked the sound. Odd, but there it is. The final blow came in a listening session where a friend and I were comparing K-340, K-701, and K-1000 (just for the heck of it). Bad luck for the K-701 was that I discovered that the Wheatfield HA-2 is a very good K-1000 amp. The K-1000 is simply better than either of the others if the amp has the power for it, and the Wheatfield does.
