I have a 2 year old staying at the house this week and I am afraid she is going to want to put legos or some other toy in the front port of my Monitor Audio 6 (for some reason Tim wants to have her play right next to the speaker system). The speakers have front ports. Would it be ok to cover the front ports with some sort of light cloth for the week (while the system is on). This is the main tv setup so I can't put the speakers in a different room. I'm not so concerned about the sound but whether it could damage the amplifier. My guess is that is probably ok but will look like shit. I was thinking of using thin like a disposable dish cloth like this.

I don't know what KG has to say, but I've had the chance to carry a DBT at my place using cryoed and uncryoed tubes on my speaker amp, and I spotted them with 0 errors . This doesn't mean the cryoed were better. They weren't. Cryoing was clearly an awful thing on power tubes. On caps I also noticed clear differences, but for obvious reasons it was impossible to carry a proper DBT. Probably some parts change more undergoing cryoing than others. Not sure the plastic sheet on an electrostatic HP would change a wee bit.

This is an idea I've had for years. I have a lot of audio equipment and other gear (but still a tiny fraction compared to many HCers). Much of it is in less than 100% working order. Some of it is "door stop" or "paperweight" status. There are bits I'd like to get working again and things I'd do better to throw out. I am sure I am not the only one. ok, so a couple questions that might seem strange, but.. once digital signal shows up on a digital input, what happens? What I mean is, I'm assuming the driver goes into a fetch loop and it just writes that info to disk. Is there room here for errors or quality degradation? What sort of software is there out there do this "recording", any recommendations? Finally, is there some sort of standalone unit that can do this and say dump the data to a CF card or something? I'm mildly curious also how this is done with DSD as well.

few weeks ago I heard noise on one channel of my headphones. took CD player off that circuit and that furman surge protector. I now have the CD player going to my receiver via sony h.a.t.s, so its just digital out and not using the analogue stage headphone amp in the player. Its on a different circuit and surge protector. I can hear noise on one speaker like I heard with the headphones. I'm thinking this is something with the player, but maybe both circuits just suck that bad, it is an old house and the circuits share lots of items. I am planning to get Yumi a digital piano for Christmas. She has been playing since she was young (she is used to an acoustic piano). I have an old Casio PS-20 (https://www.musiciansfriend.com/keyboards-midi/casio-ps-20-88-key-digital-piano) from 2002 which does have hammer weighted action but I am sure the technology has come a long way since then. I was looking at the Yamaha Arius 163B since I have heard good things about Yamaha. I listened to both this one and the 143 and this one certainly had a better sound. My trusty Sony a100 bit the dust the other day and it's well out of warranty at this point so I figure it's time for a new camera. I'd like to keep the cost under $1k (body only or w/ kit lens). While I liked the a100 I'm thinking it might be a good idea to go with a Canon or Nikon this time due to the large of amount of available lenses and their seemingly better performance at higher ISO levels. Any suggestions/recommendations are appreciated

Julie and the girls just moved into an apartment and I'd feel a lot safer if the apartment had some sort of security system. The ADT type subscription services seem less expensive per month but start to add up over a bit of time. Has anyone set up a system themselves or has suggestions for a diy system? 2 bedroom with windows, a living room door and a main door need to be covered essentially. I am thinking buying a cheap netbook and throwing a couple of tb drives in an enclosure and connecting them to some cameras. So I've been a long time Norelco user and I have one that I've reasonably liked... but the blades are pretty dull and replacements aren't cheap and it's an old model. Thinking about jumping ship to Braun as most of my friends that go electric seem to prefer Braun. Looking at their top of the line with self cleaning et all.. it's ~220 on Amazon.com Any people have experience in the Braun/Norelco dealio? Yeah I know manual is superior and all that, but I'm not particularly hairy and even though I have to make a lot of motions I only shave 2x a week and it's still pretty speedy.

So my daughter is sitting in her bedroom in a rented house while away at college listening to music on a Apple Hi-Fi boombox. Suddenly there is a loud pop and sparks are flying from the power cable to the boombox while the room goes dark. She pours her water on the carpet which ignited from the sparks and called me. The boombox was plugged into a cheap multiple outlet surge protector along with a curling iron and hair straightener neither of which were turned on at the time. So I'm in need of a component rack of some kind. As it stands I have my turntable on a random wood end table, and the rest of my gear splayed across my computer desk. Per title, and no, not DVD-A, just plain DVD. I have a couple of concert films that I would like to extract the audio to CD (lossless). This is on a Mac. I played around with OSEx and mac3 something or other last night and managed to extract AC3 files for each track from one and get them converted to AIFF, but it was somewhat less than intuitive. I haven't compared the sound of said CD to the DVD yet, but it seems fine. Also, the total content was a bit outside the range of a 700Mb CD (at 1:30). If I were to compress it slightly to try to fit the whole thing on one CD, any suggestions? If I extracted the AC3 to mpeg4 (m4a?) would that save any space? Thanks -Chri…

Oh, snap! Has anyone noticed that today Facebook has changed their photo viewer, so that when you click on a photo to view, the bottom of the photo is cut off in order to display an ad at the lower right corner. Hello, this saturday day we are flying out for our first family trip to Disney world - Molly (age 5) and Myles (age 3) do not know yet, so don't say anything. The wife has appointed me to find a nice backpack that will hold all the typical little kids survival tools that will be needed - snacks, juice, rain ponchos, electronics, etc. I would love to know what you guys are using for family trips, this would be a backpack I would wear big enough to hold a bunch of stuff without being too bulky.

I'm not much of a photographer, but the cameras in this article in the NY Times that can shoot 30-60 frames per second seem interesting. Definitely could be useful for kids/sports/nature stuff.
