The Mac-Mini is also limited to 16GB RAM also. That is a huge monkey in the wrench for me. If you are in need or want of higher RAM they are still selling Intel based Mac-Minis with up to 64GB RAM. I think the highlight for me was the MacBook Air, which hasn't interested me in a while.

One More Thing Boo-urns to Intel and some bold claims on the new Apple silicon in the new Macs. The claimed performance and battery life improvements are compelling – the ball is in the developers' court to develop native apps to maximize these gains. To me, the only fly in the ointment is the 16GB RAM on the 13" MacBook Pro – the older Intel MBP can be configured with up to 32GB (they probably have a lower than 5% takeup rate on that configuration, though). It's really great to see the Mac Mini get some love – they're super handy for HTPC, developers, and all sorts of people. And it's great that they are holding the line on the prices. Some of the Macs were starting to look like a really poor value with mediocre performance/features and old silicon.
  4. I wish we had a thumbs up option. "Like" is too weak to attach to that Pie diatribe. Brilliant as usual, and makes the point that even dictatorships are remaining silent regarding the orange menace's defeat. And on behalf of the rest of the non-dictatorial world - hoo fucking ray! Bye bye to Trump and his miserable cohort of acolytes, and welcome to someone who is actually presidential.
  5. Happy Birthday, Chris!

Some really big claims, yeah. Can't wait to see what reviewers think. Also, everything today was the 4+4 chip. Presumably they also have 6/8/more? core chips in development for the big laptop and for desktop.
  8. Happiest of birthdays, Mikey! (party favour noise)
  9. Workout space started. Need to get my soldering arm back in shape.
  10. Have a great one Mikey! Cheers!
  11. Let's have a shitpost! I've used Vox as my light duty playback app on OSX for ages now. It supports FLACs and other formats, and scrobbles to last.fm. Unfortunately, it's devolved into SaaS and borderline spyware at this point. It now requires an account to even access the advanced options. Enter DeaDBeeF, which is FLOSSy, has a somewhat cringey name but does just about everything one might care about, right out of the box. It supports FLACs etc, has built in last.fm support, and handles replaygain (which Vox does not.) As a bonus, it lacks spyware and doesn't require an account.
  12. Also not sure why they introduced the MacBook Pro. I don’t see paying $200 more for a touchbar and nothing else? Not sure what is “Pro” compared to the new Air.
  13. I should do that too. Gonna be a long lockdown.
  14. Happy birthday, Mikey!

  29. Thanks @Blueman2 for the tips. Here is the internal picture (the file attachment allowance of this forum is ridiculously small!). You can see that I had to cut notches on the chassis and modify a few other things to make them fit. Also low-profile HV film caps are used due to the transformer posts protruding from the top cover. The hum levels of the assembled amp (2.5mV to 5mV) are way below the audible threshold. For the hum to be audible, it needs to be somewhere near 50mV. The wide-band noise of this amps is quite low (<1mV). So higher S/N ratio is possible if the hum is under better control. The surplus power trans has two 6.3V heater windings. One of them was for the rectifier and has high working voltage. I used it for the 6SN7s because it is lifted to near the B- level. The other 6.3V heater winding has a lower working voltage rating which is good enough for the small tubes' heaters when lifted to about 65V.

I am impressed by how well-researched the videos are and how she's able to keep the presentation fun for more casual fans. Definitely one of my favorite channels in the last while... my last purchase was a Swatch, so I'm not even close to being in the main demographic.
  31. I've never seen one without coat hangers. BTW, I pick the grey swatch on the left. Gay designer fee waved.
  32. Went over to a friend’s house and made a pair of field coil loudspeakers over the weekend. They sound surprisingly nice!
  33. Are those freshly plucked eyelids in his paws?
  34. It's been a nasty weekend, weather-wise. Perfect for staying in and doing stupid things with lasers. I needed an image to test out dithering and came up with this:
  35. I made myself a Rosamunde-style mergez sausage. So sad they pulled out of the little shop next door to Toronado. The newer Rosamunde brew pub and restaurant is good but doesn't have the same feel.
  36. Got outside for another bike ride. Was able to enjoy the color orange in a different way than the past few years.
  37. LES SIÈCLES, FRANÇOIS-XAVIER ROTH Sur instruments d’époque / On period instruments
  38. Don't worry too much about the offset 20-30V voltage. It will not hurt your headphones at all.
  39. I forget to hang some photos of this amplifier. Sorry, I did not have any GRLV at that time ready.
