I desperately need a good desk lamp. Using the computer as a light source just isn't a great idea for many reason. I noticed that Softech DL-90 has really good reviews on amazon and I like the idea of using LEDs and having a natural-like light source. I was wondering if anyone has used a similar type of light or has any alternatives?

  8. I thought twice about posting this here since it became a bit long, but it's something I just wrote in my blog with my thoughts about this issue. I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately, and this text just contains my reflections on the subject. I know you guys are not very much into long texts - as I've learned in my JH13 review -, but I hope I can be excused since this isn't a review and to me it's a rather complex issue, so drying it out would probably make it less successful in expressing what's complex to me. I posted this here in the off-topic since that way, if no one becomes interested, it can simply become lost in oblivion or deleted. Still, if anyone…

  9. My brother's phone is dying (only works about half the time) and I want to get him a cheap unlocked replacement (AT&T). He has data service right now. Newegg has the Palm Pixi plus for $65. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875101040 Is there anything better around this price?

  10. ...Things/Stuff/Places to photograph? I shall be in nyc on the 2nd and 3rd of May. There are all those bus tours one could take and absent suggestions I might just do that. However, if the locals feel my time might be better spent not doing that, I am open to suggestion. If anyone would like to walk around during the day or perhaps meet up for lunch let me know. Any company would be much appreciated. The last time I was in the city was in 3rd grade so I am looking forward to spending the 2 days walking around. Not into the whole club/bar scene (I don't drink or party). Will be at the mercy of public transportation for getting back to dad's apt in little ferry, nj so k…

  11. Oh dear, don't annoy the nerds, it only makes them mad .. http://people.xiph.o...neil-young.html Articles last month revealed that musician Neil Young and Apple's Steve Jobs discussed offering digital music downloads of 'uncompromised studio quality'. Much of the press and user commentary was particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of uncompressed 24 bit 192kHz downloads. 24/192 featured prominently in my own conversations with Mr. Young's group several months ago. Unfortunately, there is no point to distributing music in 24-bit/192kHz format. Its playback fidelity is slightly inferior to 16/44.1 or 16/48, and it takes up 6 times the space. There are a few re…

Birthdays are broken on H-C right now, but I found while looking for an amp comparison. H/B/D, K/G! I always imagined you as the Great Cthulhu of headphone amps, lying alseep in the Class A City, dreaming of tube amp designs that would drive mere mortal DIYers insane.

So recently, a friend of mine sent an MBTI test my way and I found out my type. Then I asked my close friends and realized that every single one (5/5) are the same type. I was wondering if we have the same bias in this forum. If I were to guess, I'd say it wouldn't be as predominant but there would still be a skew towards the same type. Please don't read up on the test before you take it because I think it would skew your results. Here's the test. http://www.humanmetr...win/jtypes2.asp I am I would expect most people to be

  14. I could have sworn there was a thread on this, but I can't find one. We're about to replace our not-too-old Bissell vacuum. We'd like something that cleans well, vacuums up cat hair from our Olympic-class shedding specialists and doesn't require frequent repair. Anybody have a recommendation? Are the Dysons worth the price of admission? I see a Hoover on Amazon that looks pretty similar to the Bissell. http://www.amazon.co...33834391&sr=1-6 I wonder if it's riddled with semi-fatal design flaws. It's certainly cheap eoungh. The Bissell is nice, apart from not being able to get cat hair off upholstery, but the brush bar has under-specified bearings (or a…

Posterboy. Dude joined in 2008, went to all the trouble of creating a profile and uploading a tremendously unflattering picture just to tell us about the 1964 Vincent Price version of I Am Legend. I remember when I saw his post, in 2008, and saId, 'Damn that's one unflattering picture'. Still he's lookin good for 90. Cheers.

Looked around ... surprised we didn't have one of these threads. If we've got one, mods can feel free to move this post. I'll start: My 15yo daughter and I live about 1/4 mile from the high school. She's the manager for the girls softball team. She also pretty much has her own apartment in the lower floor of the house. Guess what shows up at my place every day at about 6? Yeah, about half the girl's softball team and the gaggle of boys that follow them around. So I feed 6 to 10 teens reeking of hormones and sweat pizza or tacos most evenings. I don't mind it a bit though. April's had a tough couple of years living in California with her mom, and being back in Mo…
