Wild and Crazy Go Nuts!

  1. Started by Yikes,

My Sister who lives in Arlington (a few bolcks from Metro) called me today asking for help moving tomorrow, so I'm heading down to help (basically watching the movers). I'm going to stay at least through Saturday morning, so that gives me all day Friday to sight see. My last time in DC was in the early to mid 90's (visited the Holocaust Museum shortly after it opened), and I haven't been to the Smithsonian since the 80's. Where should I go? there was a burger place back in the 70's (Bon Appetite - President Ford use to send Secret Service agents there to get take out. When I was younger it was the air & space that drew me, now perhaps the National Gallery suits me …

I am so out of touch with technology that it is a little disappointing, I need a little help from you tech savvy folk. I need to set up a workstation to view DICOM images from a database and would like a laptop to drive this thing. I have a pair of EIZO monitors which use a DVI input, I have a decent size storage bay ( up to 9TB ) which negates the need for a large drive but I would prefer 7500rpm +- 200GB onboard. It seems to make sense to go with a quadcore processor and I need to keep the budget at $2500 I have found a few laptops which meet most of the requirements but none of the graphics cards seem to support DVI. Is this technology being phased out ? I k…

  5. Started by The Monkey,

I always find this day sad, but this year is more poignant to me due to the 30th anniversary attention, etc. Growing up, I lived on the 22nd floor of the building next door to the Dakota. We saw John and Yoko with some frequency. I later went to grammar school with their son. They were unpretentious, unassuming, and decent. And for the most part, it appeared that most in the neighborhood gave them at least some space. I was in my PJs getting ready for bed the night John Lennon was murdered--I was 8 years old. I heard the shots. I didn't know what they were--amazingly I had never heard gunshots even in NYC through the 70s. They went "crack!" not that enhanced ec…

Todd! Hope you had a great 46th yesterday while we were marveling that Dave Brubeck was 90. May you be as healthy and productive as he has been over these last 44 years. Cheers!

Cubs legend Ron Santo dead at 70 - Daily Pitch: MLB News, Standings, Schedules & More - USATODAY.com If there's any other Cubs fans around, they'll probably care to know about this. Unfortunately I never knew Santo as a player, only as a commentator, but I grew up listening to him on WGN Radio and am very saddened by this.

So, I thought my Christmas shopping was done, but turns out my brother already owns the first thing I bought for him. I now want to get him a basic, all-inclusive, beginner brewing kit, and I've been looking around, mostly at Amazon, but I obviously have no clue what's decent or not. I'm fine with anything in $200 range or under. Any ideas?

Happy birthday, Zoe! (My 8 year old daughter, who is buying headphones with her b-day $$$). Most of you don't know her, but I don't care. She digs headphones and listens to FLAC on her Sansa Clip +, sometimes with PX100s. Man, I feel old. **BRENT**

It's hard to find gifts for my dad--he's the kind of guy who kind of has everything. But today he was telling me how much he liked Superman comics when he was a kid. He wanted to know if the comic was still published. I know nothing about comics. Nothing. But I was thinking about putting together a little package of superman comics for him for Christmas. Not collector's item type stuff, just maybe a few cool things. It's the kind of thing he would never get for himself. Now I could use some advice about what to get and perhaps a suggestion where to get it. Again, I don't need any collectibles, just some comics and/or related stuff would make him very happy I think. …

I checked under the hood for dead animals, I looked under the seats and in the trunk, I don't see anything. also it doesn't smell bad under the hood, only inside the car and in the trunk. It smells like something dead and has grown stronger throughout the day. suggestions?

  19. Sorry for the lengthy post to follow, but I took the 2008 Outlook in today for a noisy power steering pump, and ended up test driving a 2008 Infiniti G35x all wheel drive that I really liked. I'd really appreciate some advice from you level-headed people about maybe buying it, or not. I didn't want to clog up the "last thing you bought" thread with this, but that was where we talked a little about a "next car" recently and got me started. The G has 31,450 miles and has most options except navigation, and very nice new Michelin all season tires that look like they'd be good on the occasional snow we get here. And I got them down from $28,988 to $27,500 + $2,000 cash-…

  24. As some or many of you may know, I decided to turn a visit to last month's Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in Denver into a week-plus epic road trip through the southwest. While I certainly couldn't visit every amazing place this part of the country has to offer, that didn't stop me from trying at a breakneck pace. To my delight, I found more amazing sights than I ever could have imagined, including many excellent surprises. Here is a collection of photos from the journey. Of course, there are many more, but this felt like an appropriate representation. From Cali to Denver: Just outside an I-70 rest stop, Central Utah A chilly morning in Maroon Bells, n…
