Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. Started by HiWire,

There is an excellent feature on headphones for use as studio monitors in this month's issue of Sound On Sound. Check it out if you can - it is interesting to hear about the opinions of various engineers using the same headphones that we purchase for the pleasure of listening.

Well...these arrived this week via the Gilmore express and to make it easier for anybody looking for info on them, a new thread it is. As Kevin documented before, the amplifier is a dinky little thing and a direct clone of the Stax SRM-001. The amp is pretty much useless though as it doesn't have any volume control and you can't use it from a portable device as it needs a full 2Vrms input signal to reach usable volume levels. Here is a picture of the entire system plus what Kevin Posted: Opamp feeding a quad of fet's and into the output transistors. All AC coupled... Yet again another clone of older Stax stuff but onto the headphone…

  3. Started by Dusty Chalk,

Fuck, I tripped over my headphone cable of my ATH-A100Ti, and bent/broke the plug. I also broke my soundcard in my computer, but care a lot less about that, since I usually use an external one -- I don't think I'll get that fixed. So I'm thinking: rewire it! So what's the best 1/4" plug out there right now? Does Cardas make one? Or should I just get any old one? Should I also recable my headphones while I'm at it? Or should I sent it back to audiocubes or eifl for fixing? Can that even be done? Actually, just tested it out on a different connection, it appears it still works, must be the soundcard that got disconnected on one channel.

I have had the oppritunity to audition these cans twice. Once unamped out of ipod and once with an iBasso P1. Was dissapointed both times. Knew I would be with them unamped. Not quite as dissapointed with them out of the P-1 but something was still lacking. Have since upgraded to AE-2 and was wondering if this amp would be more suited for them (no longer have cans avilable for auditioning). Have found a couple of really good deals on used ones (around 120 USD shipped). Not much to loose and could always resell if I didn't like results. Would be used mostly for Blues or older Rock (no metal).

  5. Started by Icarium,

I think I'm the first consumer to get a pair... sorry NoNoNoNoNoNo! They rushed 1 of my two pairs out in order for me to try and get it reterminated to balanced prior to the meet. It comes in a giant ziplock bag in a functional travel bag. They look pretty much identical to the prototypes but less beat up, a nice Audeze logo with a L on the left side (I believe designating which side is left etc and a very durable looking cable. I believe they consulted a few of our resident cable making experts for tips and used something along the lines of Canare/Belden? cable. Did some tests immediately since I'm still at work and it seems like it leaks as little sound as my…

Guys, just notice today that my HF-2 emits a buzzing sound when the notes hit a mid note. Like when the piano note hits, the driver buzz. Anyone experience this before ? Is there a way to fix this or should send to Grado for repair ? I hate sending it cause I live in the other part of the world.....but if push comes to shove...... Thanks

The local Craigslist is choke full of "NIB" Beats. Somebody must be bringing in truckloads of Chinese knock-offs. We have had a ton of those white van speakers around here, now these. There must be 20 a day listed. Worthless either way, real or not. Is this the case around the other metro areas around the country?

A friend alerted me to this and I didn't see it posted anywhere else: http://gizmodo.com/5990520/scientists-have-made-graphene-earphones-and-theyre-amazing I'm not really surprised that a membrane that thin yet strong can produce good sound. But I am excited to see who adopts this tech first and what sort of amp is required to drive them.

Im looking at getting a new set of headphones for my father for drumming. He has explained to me in the past that a particular type of headphones were able to adjust left and right ear volume and that helped him distinguish the drums from certain songs. Since good headphones dont seem to have this feature, i thought about using a equalizer or something of that nature. What would i need audio wise to make the drums in a song stand out?

  10. Meanwhile at CES 2018..... USD $2400

Okay, not a new idea, but Noveto is at CES this year, so perhaps closer to a real product. https://noveto.com

  12. Started by hirsch,

Just got my UE10's. This is my first impression with a set made using my...impressions. First (sonic) impression is pretty much the same as I got at the National meet using a generic seal, but better still. These things are incredible. An IEM with real low end. Loads more detail than ER4s. Can be driven by pretty much anything. Not as isolating as the Ety's, but very nice sonic upgrade.

I only just discovered the ATH-ES10, and it looks to be fairly high grade. Anyone heard both this and the ESW10 and want to compare? Or have other things to say about the ES10 (that's the shiny titanium one)?

  14. Dear All, I love to listen to music, like all of us, for a few years now I have Audio Note E boxes and 2A3 PSE amp. Love the detailed, but still relaxing sound of it. A good balance between details and sweetness. With other words, I like the sound of an Audiolab 8000A, but can not listen to it for more than like 30 minutes. Also like the sound of the 300B tubes, but too sweet for me, hide details. Recently, I can not listen too much to speakers, I must use headphones. I have an old Sennheiser HD 565 ovation, what I have tried to change sometimes, but I could not. I have tried HD600, I liked the bass (the 565 weakness), but also the soundstage got more narrow, at the mid…

$3400 for "mint" HE90 Orpheus but money order/certified check only. Do we know anyone like this from London? https://app.audiogon.com/listings/in-ear-sennheiser-orpheus-he90-headphones-2014-11-06-headphones-n15-5lh

I know we do not discuss headphones much anymore but I have question for the Grado experts. I have to replace the pads on a couple of my Grados (actually one is an Alessandro) due to the infamous pad disintegration issue. There is some residue on the wooden cups that I would like to clean off. It is pretty clean just using a soft cloth and soft brush but there is some residue that I would like to remove without harming the finish. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

  17. Looking for something that will noticeably outperform my jaba Jabra Elite 45h - Titanium don't want to pay more then 270 dollars. Any suggestions

  18. Because of the fact that the first PS1000 #3 already show up, just wonder if anyone here waiting for his/her pre-order to. Looking for some critical GS1000 vs PS1000 review...Anyone?

  19. So recently i have been trying to find a headphone that is within my budget of (Below $80) i've done some research and found some headphones that might be right for me. I use headphones mainly for enjoying music and playing games. I currently have the Philips SHP805 and I enjoy the quality that this headphone provides me, but now I’m looking for better headphones. I'm not a hardcore gamer and just need a headphone that when I’m playing first person shooter games i could hear where the footsteps are clearly. Sound Quality is what matters to me at most. Sorry I'm completely new to buying headphones. Thank You! Here's a list of headphones i think are the best f…

  21. Good day to all! New Member here. I'm not really an Audiophile and i don't really have ultra sensitive ears but i can make enough distinction between the earphones that came with my mobile devices and something with a higher quality. I would love to get an Audio Technica ATH - M50X but they're out of my budget range. At the moment i am enjoying my ATH-S300 and ATH-WS33X both under 70 USD (3,000 PHP). though the cheaper of the two i find myself liking the ATH-S300 more. At the moment im looking for an under $50 in ear headphones for the daily grind after i gave away my sound magic PL11 and Audio Technica CLR-100 to my cousins. Both good earphones for their price but im…

Looks like I am going to sell my K701 and M^3 for a transportable upgrade. At the moment I cam trying to decide between the Shure E500/E530 and the UE Triple.Fi. They are roughly the same price. I guess I am looking for musicality, while still retaining good detail retrieval. They will be used with my ZV:M (linout) -> Mini^3. Any experiences/suggestions?

  24. I was asking this before, not here, but I do not have that impression that these were ever tried by somebody. As far as I know you can not buy them in Europe or U.S.A., but in Russia is no problem. When they came out, like year ago, they were like USD 250-300 and now you can get them for like USD 140. So, the question is, anybody who can share? I am not looking for an review, cos I have seen them, just need "inside" information, if you know what I am talking about, someone from community... THX

  25. Started by iceman94,

So I just acquired a pair of HP-2s. While testing them out today, I detected a bass rattle in the right driver. Confirmed this using test tones from the RealTraps site. The rattle does not show up with my HD650s, so I'm inclined to think its not my other gear. However, I don't have another source/amp combo to test on. Is this sort of thing fixable? Should I just return the headphones to the seller? Am I being stupid and missing anything? I would greatly appreciate any and all help.
