I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. A thread for discussing the "Unisound Golden Series Home Theater AU265-R Speakers." A number of head-casers got these on sale @ ThingFling, and a number more were frustrated when they tried to order them from the same and got an error. I finally got mine today, after FedEx utterly fucked things up failed at delivering them three times in a row. It was a bleeding odyssey for me to get them. The FedEx ground location is on the airport industrial park off Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA (an armpit if there ever was one). The drive ended up taking three times as long as it should have as I tooled around looking for an unmarked street. I haven't so much as taken the sp…

Should be able to pick it up by the end of next week. I'm thinking it will be a pretty big upgrade over my trusty VK-42SE. Now all thats left are the amps. Right now I'm leaning towards the BAT VK-75se or 150se tube amps or the 600SE SS BAT amp. That should complete the BAT/Harbeth system.

Any recommendations? I don't have a price range. Just something that sounds clear and balanced. Biggie.

  4. Started by Fungi,

I was listening to Wish You Were Here the other day and I swear, Gilmour was in the wall playing and singing to me. I had to get my roommate in my seat and he said "creepy, it's like your own personal concert." This setup isn't even expensive or acoustically well set up. And then I realized that there is no avoiding getting a speaker rig when I settle.

I think I'm growing out of my Quad 12L Actives. Lately, as my tastes moves further into jazz, I find that they are fatiguing in the highs and are lacking in bass and bass extension. I'm looking for speakers <$800 that will be easily upgradable in the future. I'm thinking either floorstanders or monitors+sub combo and I'm willing to go used. Unfortunately, I'm a grad student so I won't be in a room with larger than 12'x12' anytime soon so factor that in. I'm leaning toward passives since I will have more choices in the future to upgrade. The price does not include an amp. What do you guys think?

Looking at push pull design versus a DHT design. I was told that DHT will not be able to result in as powerful an amp as push pull. Also what sound differences will I hear between a sick implemented DHT versus a push pull?

What components do you need in the chain between the cd player and the speakers themselves to drive them and give them volume control? What brands to you recommend and why? ( Price point under $1500; goal involving, full, dynamic, relsoving sound-not too bright or edgy, yet not rollled off on highs, mids well present but not over stated, bass, foundational, but not dominant, boomy or muddy, just tight. Listen to acoustic singer emphsis and jazz. Transparency and immediacy critical. (posted something like this on Source site referring to dac issue and didn't get response.)

  9. I'm looking for advices of you again. I'm looking for stereo system components which reveals cables, records, even stands which they stands on. I want to call what I want characterless or boring to listen. I want this system for A/B testing. And of course I'm on a budget like 6000 Dollars. I'm going to look for second hand components. and XLR is must. The brands I've heard from people are; PMC (I'm going to listen some of them in saturday) and ATC for speakers, Bryston for amplifier, and I'm looking for a studio dac (I think mytek has best price/performance ratio) Do you have any ideas about any other brands? Any cheaper alternative to Bryston esp…

Spent some time with these speakers in the same setup that I did the last time I wrote my initial impressions. This time around we listened to his digital rig mostly (CDS3 system). Again I'm left stunned how good speaker playback gets, and how petty and overpriced my headphone system looks. We listened to mostly rock, jazz, blues and classical. First up spun some "modern" Megadeth. Hidden Treasures is one of their 90s EPs that sounds damn good and didn't fall victim to obscene amounts of compression. Angry Again has a real wallop to the kick drum, and a nice bass line that sounded absolutely real if you closed your eyes. Electric guitar sounded so sweet as well. Male v…

https://wyred4sound.com/products/pre-amps/mpre would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this. For the price it looks too good to be true. I've been eyeing on an upgrade on my emotiva dc1 for a while, more so as a preamp vs DAC (so far my DAC usage has been cable tv from the oppo and Apple TV optical for tv/movie purposes). Fully discrete dual differential balanced both on the input and output side, but the kicker for me is that it will take the rca in and perform the balanced output "correctly" to feed my stealth monitors. Hi, Once a year or so I think about getting back into ESLs and even though the prices on vintage Quads seem to be on the increase I'd be interested in the thoughts of members here who have experience with or are interested in classic ESLs from Quad, ML (CLS, CLS II.), SoundLab, etc. I guess my preference would be for a rebuilt ESL-57 or 63 based on the ones I've heard, but I've always wanted to listen to some of its competitors. Any fans here? k

My last thread here was about the Zus which I ended up buying used, the Soul Supreme, for a nice deal and I'm ready to move up the game.. Enter the Devore. I have been on a killing spree listening to speakers to find my next purchase and so far the only ones I liked were the Devore O/96 and Fleetwood Deville. So.. I'm curious if any of you guys heard the O/96 and O/baby ? The O/baby really is way cheaper than the O/96 that I loved but the store here doesn't carry them.. given that the O/baby has same new tweeter as their more expensive Reference and same woofer as the O/96 but smaller cabinet, maybe they could represent even a step up in sound or sim…

Brought home a pr. of these amps to try with the Harbeths to see how 25wpc 845 would do with them. They use 1 pr. of 6sn7 and a single 211/845 power tube each. (monoblocks) they are Chinese made. Anyone have any info on them? I have always been a big fan of 845 based amps, and after Axpona i have had the itch to try one. If these work out I might try something a little nicer and more powerful like the Cary 211 or Cayin 9088 in my system.

Where the jigsaw parts meet. I very lightly pressed it back on to the sticky backing, but am not sure if the back is something fragile or not. Anyone know how big a deal this is?

  22. Well I finally have my Europa's back from repair tonight and before they get shipped off to their new owner on Monday I figured I'd take some time to jot down how they compare to my Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Sigs. When the Europa's were my main speakers probably the biggest factor in wanting to upgrade was a lack of bass. I was able to confirm that lack of bass pretty soon after my comparison began tonight. While the Europa does well with the leading edge of bass notes (for instance bass guitar or kick drums) they fail pretty miserably at having the proper weight behind those instruments. For comparison sake listening to bass guitars and kick drums on the Tylers is a…

Well Mikhail told me I would have some kind of balanced preamp as a loaner if my Maestro was not done before turkey-day. I get home today and here's a box with the Transparency SS balanced preamp in it. It detroys the Musical Fidelity cold out of the box. just so much more of everything. Not on the level of my Ayre K-1xe, but close. Not quite the detail or air in the top end. Better bass, and midrange is a little fuller with the SP. Overall a very smooth and relaxed preamp. A little soft on top, awesome midrange, and great bass. I can live with this until my Maestro gets here. Some photos in system and the mandatory vinyl shot. Photos attached of: The current system..…

Yesterday I made the trip to hang out with a friend I made this year. It was mainly to hear my NIN- The Fragile vinyl since my analog setup still isn't up I should have taken down more details of his setup, but briefly the speakers were the latest Avantgarde Duo 2.1s, his vinyl setup was a modded VPI Aries3, with I believe SET amps powering the mids/tweeter. The Duos have self powered woofers. Digital front end was some Naim gear (didn't listen to it much). It was in a dedicated speaker room which seemed really well setup. I wish I brought my camera. I've heard his system a few times but this is the longest listening session I've done, I was there for around 8 or 9 ho…

OK picked up a pair of Harbeth P3ES-2 locally at a decent price. Hooked up to my old Bryston B60R integrated (60wpc 8ohm) fed by 840c (spinning CDs and also fed optically by a macmini). I need to cook this in for awhile, but damn it sounds really nice. Listening to Beck/Sea Change now in nearfield mode. I'm really enjoying the freedom from headphone strapped to my head (of course, if I'm going to rock out with my ___ out, I still reach for the headphones so as not to disturb the household). I still have an Omega sat/sub system on order to mate with my Almarro flea power amp for a setup in a different room. I may be done with headphones -- keep 2 or 3, otherwise they…
