It's that magical time of year again. Black Friday-Cyber Monday! I've been asked to purchase a PA system for speaking events, and I'm trying to narrow my choices down to 2 portable, compact systems. The Bose L1 1S is slightly more expensive, and it requires a power cable. The JBL Eon One has a battery for cordless use. I've read that the Bose sounds better and it has a wider dispersion pattern. Otherwise, the two are similar, with bass units at the bottom and compact built-in mixers. Does anybody have experience with this new generation of compact PA speakers? Does anyone here know anything about these speakers. Enclosure design looks very interesting on paper, but I was curious if someone heard these. They only have two models it seems.

I currently have a yamaha M80 amp that I found on craigslist for 150 bucks but I've been getting the itch to upgrade. I have no experience with speakers and don't know what a decent budget amp for magnaplanar speakers would be. What would you recommend?

Hopefully this belongs in the speaker forum. Finally arrived after a long ordeal with Fedex: It looks great with the rest of the family: Ah, all that black and blue looks snazzy! Silver dynahi sticks out like a sore thumb. No listening impressions, because of course I have no speaker wire. :'( Still, it is a substantial unit, quite heavy. It definitely turns on, which is a plus. The volume control makes a fun clicking noise. So in other words its already worth the asking price, sound be damned.

I rarely do any real critical listening due to the amount of work I have from school so I've been thinking about moving to a small speaker system for a bit. I dont really want to hassle with an amp to go with the speakers since I'll be moving around a lot and living in a small dorm room doesnt give me a lot of space to work with. I've been looking for the Audioengine 5s (just missed a pair of Audioengine 5s for 200 ) and Quad 11Ls on ebay and audiogon. Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for? Max budget is $400 btw

I am currently going over ideas on beefing up my speaker rig. I've got my power amp pretty much solidified, but I need ideas for a cheap preamp that can suffice until I replace it with a more high end headphone/preamp combo. B&K PRO 10 Don't know much about that pre, but $329 for a FET discrete pre with MM/MC phono stage and balanced output doesn't sound too shabby. Any ideas or thoughts you can share would be great. Again cheaper the better, ideally not a long term solution.

I plan on putting bookshelves/monitors on stands for my new downsized speaker rig, and am curious what you guys are using. Sanus seems to be a good bet without being junk, though the 29.99 special from b and h photo video is begging for a shot

Some of you might recall me having some issues with my Cicadas just a short time ago; if not here was my comment from a week/few weeks back: I followed the suggestions that were given to me concerning placement (thanks again fellas), and it does seem to be a little better now, but the low-end in particular still is imbalanced with the left side playing more strongly. Like a maroon, I'm getting the itch to ditch my highly enjoyable and convenient active Quads for some passive P3ESRs. This means I'll need an outboard amp, which is going to be a tight fit on my already-overloaded desk. So I guess I'm looking for suggestions on amps that are modestly sized and modestly powered and might have modest synergy with the Harbeths -- which are a 6 ohm load and 84dB sensitive and will be used in the very nearfield. There are a couple of Class D options which obviously fit the form factor -- Headroom, Bel Canto S300 -- but I'm not sure about the sonics. I've got a great pair of speakers in the Alon Lotus SE's. They do so much right and are untouchable (IMHO) in the used under $2k category but I have been chasing the horn dragon since attending VSAC a few years back. Best sound at the show for me was a toss up between the GoTo horns and the modded Altec Voice of the Theaters that Exemplar was running. The presence was downright scary and they were super fast. Well I've owned the Klipsch Heresy speakers and they did not do much for me. They were fun but showed their age with lack of extension and detail. This was after a cap upgrade and tweeter upgrade. About six months ago I got swept up in the Insignia decent speaker for cheap craze and purchased a pair really cheap at Worst Buys with the intention of trying my hand at the Danny Richie Mods. I'm looking for a balanced crossover to run between my pre/amp. Need to be able to cut off from 80hz down and it must have 24db slope. I'm going to use it so i can take full advantage of my subs. Its got to be balanced and I prefer active but I'm not locked in on that if the best product in my price range is passive. I dont want to spend to much to start maybe 3-400 bucks. I found the Rane AC 22B but really have no clue whats out there or whats any good. Any suggestions would really help me out as I'm going in blind. Thanks.

Hi Guys I got some horn speakers about 8 months back. They are floor standers, and naturally I sat them on the floor. But found they were slightly too low for my desk system. I thus raised them on ceramic house bricks to 20 cm off the floor, which worked ok but looked awful. Anyway, I finally got around to replacing the bricks with custom black marble plinths. They look better but interestingly the bass now is less bloated and goes lower and jus more tuneful. Odly I think the imaging and treble are cleaner as well, I think I am not imagining that. I've mentioned in the past how good I think the D-Sonic's are and how they use the exact same ICE Power modules that the Bel Canto Ref1000 and other amps use. So as some of you already know I recently won an A-gon auction for a pair of Daber Audio Monitor 3 speakers. I had never heard of Daber Audio before the auction, and I must admit that the aesthetic of the speakers had a lot to do with me bidding on them. It was pretty easy to do the math and realise I had paid a less than what it actually cost to produce these speakers, so I had no real worries about getting a fair deal. I decided to get some decent set of nearfield speakers to have on the desk next to the wall and I was thinking in something like the Audio engine A5 or Adam A5x. Don't know if I can get better for the money, what do you guys suggest?
