Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes, everyone! I started out the day the night before with dinner/drinks/trivia/drinks (including chugging a coors light in a chugging contest to end a tie breaker for 2nd place, and took the 20$ gift cert prize), then went out for a mixed drink and double tequila shots, then finished the night with another drink and some darts. I got in around 2 am and was up at 6 something to get the dead Jeep whose lights were left on. Then Zoe graduated from 8th grade (school is Pre-K through 8, so this is literally the last day she will probably ever see some of these people.) Xavier and Zoe both had exhibit nights at school, and Xavier had his band concert, along with Zoe having a graduation party across town. Ended up the night with a drink with one of the girls from Trivia last night, then gaming with Grahame. Also, for the first time in probably 15-20 years, I didn't have Mexican food for my birthday. On the bright side (for you people,) I didn't have a biscuit either. Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes. I'm going to go pass out from exhaustion and then start my slide into senility like the rest of you old bastards. <3 **BRENT**4 points

I cannot top Mikey's image, although I wish there was a torn bush on that cake. Happy birthday to the 7th tallest Mensacan. Cheers!4 points

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. I bumped into a buddy before the party at Total Wine and we collaborated. For general consumption we got Kavanagh, Tullamore Dew(white and green jug), and one other I can't remember. The TD was surprisingly smooth, I drank that all night. We also got the Yellow Spot, Jameson 18 year, and Redbreast 12 CS. The good thing is my buddy was able to take the good stuff home, so I'll get to try that next time I'm over. I'm officially an Irish Whiskey fan.3 points

So balanced electrostats have a linear response with respect to the amount of movement of the diaphragm vs voltage. That is because the dual non-linearities of each stator balance out the position of the diaphragm with respect to voltage. single ended electrostatics do not do this. So higher voltage swings result in more distortion than lower voltage swings. pretty much an exponential curve. throwing piles of dsp at the problem likely only fixes some of the problems, and then is subject to temperature and humidity of the room. The only known version of this that was ever successful was the beveridge loudspeaker. And the acoustic lens allowed for very small movements in the diaphragm to generate substantial sound levels. Which is what happens when the diaphragm is 6 feet x 1 foot. this is going to be epic fail.2 points

RIP James Bond/Simon Templar/etc. Roger Moore was the first Bond I remember from childhood / teen years. The Saint was another favorite back then. Agree with Stretch that the cunt in the bomb vest gets nothing but disgust and is not worthy of naming. RIP to the victims and families of this utterly senseless act.2 points

Here are some photos of another headband I've done for my 009's, which is very similar to the other one I did sometime ago, but on this new one I sprayed the band matte black, whereas the other I covered with carbon fibre wrapping. Now I've still got that other headband, but I'm keeping it as spare, not that I expect anything to happen to this new headband because it's very strong. P.S. I've also started putting my 009's on this different stand.2 points

Took almost two hours and an orbital buffer to remove cone residue from the rocker panels (or at least the visible parts) but my car is looking pretty good and not battle worn. Of course I'll probably fuck it up in 2 weeks at the next round but at least the baseline will be better. Washed the other cars too. Love the relatively cheap Meguiar's stuff gives such a nice shine for basically no work and their scratch stuff is great.2 points

I can thank the Baron Davis "We Believe" Warriors of 2006-07. That is the team that made me a basketball fan. I still remember cheering loudly and watching the playoff games with college buddies at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD.1 point

Yup. They had to squeeze everything they could out of that thing to make it work...and they just couldn't squeeze hard enough to get it to work above a certain level. I wonder if they're going to be satisfied or go back to the drawing board, put in a front screen, and drive it like a normal electrostat. Actually I think the best move that could be made is that the Sonoma digital dudes start building a regular headphone amp with DSP and start making a library of headphones to compensate. If they didn't have such a bitch of driver they had to work with I think their digital chops would shine through. PLease don't quote this elsewhere.1 point

@Rossliew The chassis + electronic parts + OPTs + tubes for this amp run more than 4K and months of craftsmanship to finish it. @mypasswordis I also own the KGSSHV and they do have different flavors in sound signatures. Solid-state I think is not a drop-in replacement for tubes amplifier. @JimL of course, we are not talking about hundreds of times of replacing tubes a day here :_) but tube rolling for experimental results still remains an addicting hobby for many people I guess. I can't help falling to sleep at night! :_(1 point

DCS is top drawer gear. The relatively small design team there are massively experienced and innovative. They started off designing electronics systems for defence applications back in the 80's, and then morphed into professional audio and then high end audio. Instead of using an off the shelf DAC, they use an FPGA and their own "ring DAC" (whatever that is...) I have heard one of their pieces of kit in a high end system owned by an ex-colleague and it was truly superb. The only "but" is that their gear is expensive - the Vivaldi above is the blunt end of $35k1 point

They could coat the spacer with something conducive but yeah, I doubt that is the case. Pure single ended shit with all sort of weirdness. Pure win!! Now...now... don't drag things like science into this!! It should be clear to anyone that the stators stand in the way of the sound molecules and there is no way the bass ones can get through those small holes!! Just like Ray said about the wires, they have to be thick enough for the bass to get through. In all seriousness, the stators aren't a problem in any way that I can see and getting rid of them, or making some flimsy as shit mesh stator will make everything worse. Can you even imagine how hard it is to make the Shangri-La stators actually run parallel to one another? Pretty much impossible I'd say let alone what happens when you start playing something. Hello high distortion electrostatic!!1 point

I hope they did a better job of it than the people who did the Abyss, which measures horrendously as expected. And yet there's like a 300 page thread on the Abyss on HF....1 point
