You are in a strange timezone my friend. And thanks all for the well wishes. It was a nice low-key evening with the family after a long week at work. No big presents, but that's the complication of getting old and having hobbies that do not lend themselves to others shopping for you.8 points

We were in Scottsdale (lovely place...takes a lot to make me feel young these days...LOL). Found a single bottle of 12-yr Knob Creek on the shelf at the local boozer. It's not inexpensive but if you can find it at MSRP I highly recommend it. Not a fan of the 9-yr...they began putting an age statement on the regular KC bourbon a few years back. IMHO, the 9 and 12 have very little in common. I also suggest that the 15-yr is not worth the incremental cost....12 is the sweet spot. HS3 points

Throw some yellow paisley stickers on it. Problem solved. BTW, "Problems with a Red plinth" sounds like Stings latest album.2 points

The long tail resistor (offset pot plus the one in series) should drop about 8.xV so Vce(PZTA42)+V(offset res)+Vgs(SiC)=Vg(SiC)-V(B-) //10+8.6+3.2=21.8 For PZTA42, Vce=10V and Ic=20mA is still not out of the woods. Just look at the DC current gain curves in the datasheet below. The non-linear region (due to Early Effect?) is not apparent in the SPICE model from the manufacturer. That's probably why it didn't catch the amp designer's attention. On the other hand, I was probably over worried about exceeding the C2M1000170D's max Vgs rating.1 point

I really like Slow Horses. We just watched Treason on Netflix and it has plenty of silly and highly unlikely plot elements but it was entertaining as well.1 point

there is (or at least should be) a board for the rk27 pot.1 point

On Wednesday and yesterday I watched season 1. Today season 2. Entertaining, well made. Some silly unlikely technical and biological facts, but overall worth watching.1 point

What is the coolest camera used by a Magnum photographer? It could be one of the early Leicas favored by Henri Cartier-Bresson and many others, or the Contax II rangefinder Robert Capa took to capture the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach. Perhaps it’s one of the large-format cameras still used by Alec Soth or Olivia Arthur; or maybe the bellowed majesty of Martin Parr’s Makina Plaubel 55mm fixed-lens camera, with which he shot The Last Resort. It could be any of those, but it’s not... https://www.magnumphotos.com/events/exhibitions/werner-bischof-in-color/1 point

I listened to the Cortina three times, twice off a BHSE and once off the new GC amp. Unfamiliar sources are an issue plus regular meet conditions but there was something about the midrange that bothered me, like an etch to voices which came off as very artificial but I need more time with them to nail it down. I also feel that headband is utter trash, on the second time I put them on my head the headpad caught on the metal springs causing the headphones to make a very lough "twang" sound through the earcups. I prefer the older type on the Voce, seems much more solid and better made. I'm also not sure if these are worth the price, just put them next to the CRBN and it looks like some cheap fake out of China, The headpad and earpads feel cheap and nasty and not high end in any way. This is always a personal thing but they were both sitting in front of me and they don't look, or feel, like a comparable product. The biggest issue for me though are the people who were there from DCA, I mean fucktards doesn't really cover them. I know fullwell I can be brash and bombastic but these people are utter fucking idiots. I went to their table to try the Voce and wanted to know when they were fixed as the original release of the Voce... they were fucking awful. This earpads never made any sense and it's clear to anybody who has messed with electrostatics for s long time. Same issue as with the King Sounds back in the day and they now, too, have moved to new earpads. Now the guy there, who was quick to point out he was the president of the company, said this gem when I said the Voce was awful, "Ohhh you like electrostatics so you don't like bass!" Yeah... and he also wanted to ask if I had ever designed headphones and when I started to listen, he ran over to Justin to bitch about me... which I heard most of. What a fucking idiot. Then we have the lady who was there, when I said matching of earpads was stupid loudly said this "SIR, THEY ARE HANDMADE!!!" Well fucking duhhh, all earpads are handmade outside of the molded ones super cheap ones. Most of my life I've been making things by hand, which have to be extremely consistent and it is easily done with far worse materials than these. Now I reached out to two manufacturers and asked if they had measured earpad effect on the sound. 0.1-0.4dB is worst case and with large production runs of earpads they are much closer. So the bottom line, the people making them are fucktards but I need to spend more time with the headphones. I don't feel they are worth the extra cost over the Voce, which looks much better made, and now sounds far better than they did. Add to that the Audeze CRBN being sold as B-stock for less than 3k$ and this becomes a pretty hard sell.1 point

I've sucessfully used stn0214 as replacement for ksc5026M as per JoaMat's recommendation in several other builds. Don't know the heat dissipation requirement for the position where they are used in KGSSHV, but someone more knowledgeable than me might chime in here.1 point

2009 was one of the craziest years of my life, paralleling 1996. I should do a photo essay on it. That'd take more time than I have, so here's a Cliff's Notes version. The year started fairly inertly, with snow and ice: I took a photo of my room that was utterly unrepresentational of its cleanliness: That's my then-new late 2008 Macbook. Then I had some vintage Mac gear restored: I pestered a sleepy cat with a Canon 85mm F/1.8: I let my friend use my 17-40L with his 5D Mk II: I experimented with sun stars: I got my first (of 3) IR-modified digital cameras: I experimented with zoom bursts: ...with mixed success. I mucked about with HDR, as I had done for years: I met a pretty German woman who worked as a waitress in the local diner I haunted throughout the 00s: Then things got interesting, but that tale is going to have to wait for a later post.1 point

RIP to a dear friend - Martin Kari - One of the original and fellow PLOWEDster aka - Marty aka - S'tan D'mon {Satan Demon} -- He did lead many of us into temptation. Here he is eyeing his next victim from the table at Ardbeggeddon He was a gentile gent from Minnesota, and loved his puns and high end audio equipment. Cheers my friend - the angels share is all yours.0 points
