I figured I would start a thread on the subject since it comes up from time to time. As at least some of you know, I like to cook, mostly involving bbq and smoking. I have been thinking about getting some higher quality knives then the ones from Sharper Image I have been using that were a gift from a couple of years ago. I started to do some research but have a lot more to do. I have a big birthday coming up and my wife tells me that some others (in laws) want to buy something nice for me (first time for that but that's another story). I suggested knives for the kitchen. So this is pretty much an open invitation for suggestions, as well as a vehicle to talk about my recent drinking binge. I tend to like porters and stouts, and surprisingly (because I don't drink coffee) java porters. I should also mention that I would prefer one of those larger corked bottles, so I can pour off a smaller portion for myself. Usually takes me over a week to finish one of them. Thought this may be fun and useful: I'll start with my Sazerac Recipe: 1 tsp Cane Sugar (I prefer Turbinado) 2 drops Peychaud bitters 1 tsp Water 2 drops Angostura Bitters 1 cup Cracked Ice 2 oz Rye (or Bourbon in a pinch) 1 tsp Herbsaint or Absinthe (I prefer Herbsaint) Lemon Twist In a shaker, muddle the sugar, water and Peychaud bitters. Add Angostura bitters, ice and rye (bourbon). Shake gently until well chilled. Pour Herbsaint or Absinthe into an old fashioned glass. Swirl to coat glass insides and bottom and pour out excess. Our faithful espresso machine has stopped working about two months ago and I've been rolling on French press coffee since then, but I miss the habit of waking up with a good espresso. The cost of repair (replacing the boiler) would be 100$+ for a machine that's worth at most 300$ new (it's 10-15 years old), I don't think it's worth it. So I was wondering, is there such a thing as a good modern espresso machine (manual of course) that can be had for 300$ or less?

Well these past few days have generated a few opportunities for some hard to get wines. I can get any amount of Sea Smoke, Ten, Botella and Southing if anyone is interested. I also received a letter notifying me of my allocation for Screaming Eagle so if any of you are insane enough for a outrageously priced California cult bragging rights Cabernet I can share some of my three bottle allocation with you. I am also getting ready to order some Glenrothes 1985 from a store Al turned me on to. The Glenrothes is $105 total. Let me know. This post can be rescinded once I sober up from the awesome dinner and wine tasting I just experienced.

I'm looking for a good all-around decanter for general use with wine. Not in the mood for anything huge or stupidly-shaped. Any suggestions? EDIT: So far, I'm a pretty big fan of the Riedel "O" after using it a couple of times at my parents' place.

And Tokyo* are available again in limited quantities from Brewdog. (Tokyo* was forced out of shop sale by the portman group so what is available is the remaining returned stock). Penguin is whatever bottles are left from the second batch of 100 or so bottles. I would be happy to buy some for people and pass it on (that is to say, you send me the money). But You can't post booze to the states so It'd have to be brought over at Canjam. Which is a long wait. If you're in Canada I don't know what the rules are. I'm looking to fill my Xmas list with items that are no more than $50. Would you please suggest your favorite ryes, bourbons, scotches, irish, etc. in that price range. I'm pretty set for scotch right now so am more interested in others choices. I'll listen to scotch suggestions though. Thanks.

This Friday (9/25) I'll be attending an evening session of the Great American Beer Festival here in Denver. Much as I would like to sample all 1,800 beers, time is limited to 4.5 hours, and I can't drink one sample per 9 seconds for more than an hour or two. Therefore, I was hoping some of you brew aficionados (read: feckless drunks) might have some suggestions for me for a beer/brewery/style I should not miss.

Well, after reading posts from Tyrion, Grawk, and others I decided to dip my feet into some bourbon. I tried some Maker's Mark, Gentlemen Jack and Jack Daniels Single Barrel. I didn't like the Gentlemen's Jack or JD Single Barrel, but I thought Maker's Mark was okay. Not a gin connoisseur by any means, but I have recently been drinking it some with dinners. Usually with tonic and lime. Just went out to a nice place last night, and ordered Bombay Sapphire. Waitress, a gin lover herself (and dang cute!), recommended one I had only heard of but never learned about or tried: Hendricks of Scotland Distilled with flowers and cucumbers! I took her recommendation, though, and glad I did! Was a very smooth yet flavorful gin, with none of the pseudo-paint-thinner scent I've smelled before, even a bit on some of the best gins.
