Seriously interested in getting pair of ATC SCM20PSL (passive) loudspeakers to replace the Ascend Sierra 2 or KEF LS50. Right now I am using a NAD M32 integrated amp ( up to 180W into 8ohms I think) but since I have plenty of DAC/pres, I could sell that and get a different power amp --- maybe ATC P1/P2 or some other. Any reason I am not going to like it? I like the idea of having detailed and linear speakers. I thought about going for the active 20s but don't want to deal with having heavy speakers on stands unless it would really sound a lot better. I plan on putting bookshelves/monitors on stands for my new downsized speaker rig, and am curious what you guys are using. Sanus seems to be a good bet without being junk, though the 29.99 special from b and h photo video is begging for a shot

Hi Guys I got some horn speakers about 8 months back. They are floor standers, and naturally I sat them on the floor. But found they were slightly too low for my desk system. I thus raised them on ceramic house bricks to 20 cm off the floor, which worked ok but looked awful. Anyway, I finally got around to replacing the bricks with custom black marble plinths. They look better but interestingly the bass now is less bloated and goes lower and jus more tuneful. Odly I think the imaging and treble are cleaner as well, I think I am not imagining that. I have a pair of Audioengine A5 actives to use for now and maybe they will be good enough (I don't use speakers very much - usually headphones) for my limited desktop use. I was thinking that I wanted to get a pair of Adam A3X and I think this is probably what I might get if I went the studio monitor route. Then I remembered how much I liked the Ascend CMT-340 when I owned them (which I only sold because they were way too big and loud for nearfield listening). I'm hoping to pick up a pair of A5s soon but due to my desk arrangement I can only handle stands with about a 4 inch rise max. I just noticed these stands on the Audioengine site. Audioengine DS1 Anyone try them out or something similar? I know ideally I should get the speakers up higher but angled like this may be my best option.

Not sure if this is the right forum, so I apologizes in advance if it's not. I'm in the market to upgrade my old HT receiver, a 5 year old HK something or other. It was bought for around $500 so it's quality is probably not quite up to par with some of the bigger boys. I'm also interested in some of that new fangled room correction technology, as my living room is not completely conducive to good sound quality (cathedral ceilings...). Hello I had a chance to buy two pairs of Stax ESTA 4u speakers. Both pairs look nice, but all four had imbalance issue and I decided to check what is inside and if I can repair them. As you can see, drivers are easy to open. The disintegrated foam's particles got into drivers and stick to the diaphragm (foam was layered with some glue). I had to clean it all from this and use Licron on diaphragms (I did that only with one pair atm). Now the one pair works well, bas is not so strong, but it is enough to work with some active sub. I’ve just finished building an EUVL F5X amp and now I’m after a decent set of speakers for $3500 which is pretty much my limit. The amp is rated around 50 watt stereo in 8 ohms. Short listed these after a couple of days searching and racking my brain... Reference 3A MM De Capo BE Proac Response 2 Usher Tiny Dancer BE 718 I owned a pair of Reference 3A royal master controls around 16 years ago, I loved them with a SET 300b amp at the time. Proac and Usher I have no experience, just read some favourable reviews. Maybe the Usher is a bit power hungry.. I dunno. Any help appreciated.

Well I've owned my Alon Lotus SE speakers for close to a year now and love them. They sounded great in my house in Cali as the room had decent diffusion and not much of an echo. When I loved to PA and set them up in my second story loft they sounded pretty awful. There was a fairly massive echo and no real low bass to speak of. I have used some auralex treatments in the past and they are ok but in this room they just did not do the trick. So after much searching on the web I checked out GIK as there panels are reasonably well made and very fairly priced based on parts cost and minimal labor costs. After years of seeing Siegfried Linkwitz and his awesome creations at burning amp I'm seriously considering setting up a LXmini + 2 setup for my small apartment. http://linkwitzlab.com/LXmini/LXmini+2.htm The prices on both the kits and the pre-built models seem pretty reasonable. SL seems very bright, plus he is a local here in Marin County. I'm thinking of asking him if I can come by his house and have a listen. Does anyone here have any experience with Linkwitz's stuff? Recently upgraded from YG Acoustics Carmels to YG Kipod Signature II speakers. Thought at first the BAT amps didn't have enough power, but it's settling in, and they are great together.

I'm about to move and need to downsize my Maggie MG-1.5/QR's (bought in 1989) to something that won't dominate the room. I've got a Classe CA-200 from a few decades ago. I do love the sound. I'm looking to trade in for something that could sit nicely and likely integrate into my home theater setup. A high WAF is required. I don't know what the trade-in value of these are but I'm likely to shed a tear or two in the process. If I could cover just new speakers for whatever the current amp & speakers go for I'd be ok with that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

OK picked up a pair of Harbeth P3ES-2 locally at a decent price. Hooked up to my old Bryston B60R integrated (60wpc 8ohm) fed by 840c (spinning CDs and also fed optically by a macmini). I need to cook this in for awhile, but damn it sounds really nice. Listening to Beck/Sea Change now in nearfield mode. I'm really enjoying the freedom from headphone strapped to my head (of course, if I'm going to rock out with my ___ out, I still reach for the headphones so as not to disturb the household). I still have an Omega sat/sub system on order to mate with my Almarro flea power amp for a setup in a different room. I may be done with headphones -- keep 2 or 3, otherwise they…

Sound Has anyone tried these out? Seems to be in a price range between the Audioengines and the Quads. With a built in USB DAC and headphone amp, the feature list looks pretty good.

Should be able to pick it up by the end of next week. I'm thinking it will be a pretty big upgrade over my trusty VK-42SE. Now all thats left are the amps. Right now I'm leaning towards the BAT VK-75se or 150se tube amps or the 600SE SS BAT amp. That should complete the BAT/Harbeth system.

Therefore, vocals and ability to come alive at low volume are important. Speakers will be used on desktop, about 2 feet away from where I sit. I'm considering Merlin TSM and Harbeth Compact 7. They seem like good choices, but I'd like to hear more suggestions.

With the new tubes, the Rogue has been singing without any noise or static. I don't know what the age of the old tubes was or how many hours they have on them but don't care as it was probably one of them. The speakers and the amp were originally in my parent's home in a 15x21 room so heat was never really a concern. Currently my bedroom is 11x13 and having the amp on most of the day is starting to make the room quite warm. I am probably going to eat the cost of the new tubes and stick the amp on audiogon - as much as I love it, I can't stand the room getting that warm anymore. I'm looking for a balanced crossover to run between my pre/amp. Need to be able to cut off from 80hz down and it must have 24db slope. I'm going to use it so i can take full advantage of my subs. Its got to be balanced and I prefer active but I'm not locked in on that if the best product in my price range is passive. I dont want to spend to much to start maybe 3-400 bucks. I found the Rane AC 22B but really have no clue whats out there or whats any good. Any suggestions would really help me out as I'm going in blind. Thanks.

Just plugged it in today. Wow, fantastic bass, in fact too much, had to pull out my horns from the corners a bit. May need to play around with stuffing or even loading the outputs with some resistance to get some extra dampening. Crystal clear, focused sound, beautiful soundstage and great tone. Nelson Pass knows his stuff. Currently being driven by the headphone output of my moth with EML 45 tubes using a 1/4 inch to RCA adapter with monster cables, lol. I can't wait to get my real headphone/preamp when it's done. Pictures probably tomorrow or the weekend.

So as some of you already know I recently won an A-gon auction for a pair of Daber Audio Monitor 3 speakers. I had never heard of Daber Audio before the auction, and I must admit that the aesthetic of the speakers had a lot to do with me bidding on them. I rarely do any real critical listening due to the amount of work I have from school so I've been thinking about moving to a small speaker system for a bit. I dont really want to hassle with an amp to go with the speakers since I'll be moving around a lot and living in a small dorm room doesnt give me a lot of space to work with. I've been looking for the Audioengine 5s (just missed a pair of Audioengine 5s for 200 ) and Quad 11Ls on ebay and audiogon. Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for? Max budget is $400 btw
