Meet Impressions

My God, It's Full of Stars!

  1. Started by NightWoundsTime,

Yeah this is a meet thread and shit. Have fun.

  2. There was only three people, two beers, and one system, but I'd say the 5th Annual International Postjack Plus Friend Ohio Mini Meet (codename: Raging With Reks) was a complete success. Jacob's speaker rig is truly awesome. Pretty much does everything I'd want a system to do. Tonally my absolute favorite part was the highs. I love it when the highs are perfect, and they were. The soundstage had really awesome depth, and the imaging was great. We went from small scale classical to large scale classical to a bunch of jazz to Rush to that weird guy from Soft Machine doing weird spoken word free form jazz. Although I spent a bit of time telling Jacob to buy a turnt…

  3. Hey everyone, As the title implies, we just had a small meet here in Rio lastSaturday, and although I didn’t think it would be very successful at first, wemanaged to gather some great people (only two are members here, though, HugoFreire and mario_fpolis) and fantastic setups. We had a few problems with the setups – the outlets werechurning out 130V and, understandably, Hugo’s Power Plant Premier didn’t seemto like it, and ended up blowing his Aristaeus’s fuzes. So we used the eXStatAto power the HE90 (heresy!) but, to my surprise – and to Hugo’s –, it did a very respectable job. Also, my ECD-1decided not to be a DAC anymore (got it fixed already though), and we had t…

  5. Started by Asr,

Been wanting to go to a Head-Fi meet incognito for a long time so I finally did it for "CanFest" in Charlotte, NC. The meet is tomorrow but I'm here and I have some pre-meet impressions to share. Oh and half the reason I came to this meet: Joe Grado! Closed headphones at Sam Ash (across from the hotel) - Ultrasone Proline 650 vs Senn HD280 Pro vs Sony MDR-7506: There was some obnoxious techno music running on this multi-headphone display so my impressions are limited on that alone, but despite that I could still tell that the Ultrasone 650 sucked ass, because it was honestly terrible, there's no other way to put it. There was a huge suck-out of all the frequencies…

Just got back from meeting up with everyone, had a great time and thanks to Andrew for supporting the event. His new maximo i590 were the best of the affordable iem's , a humble servant in the shadow of the JH13 but can stand its own anytime. Tons of top end gear to enjoy and good to share time with old acquaintances. A scrambled slide show to tease, more later ..dB

  7. What an epic meet. We listened for like 4 hours straight, went out for some Chinese, then went straight back to listening for another couple hours (wasn't keeping track of time that well, correct me if I'm wrong). I'd first like to thank Marc for shipping the LCD1 and Fostex T50v1 up here so we could do a great three-way match up between the TOTL Head-Direct, Fostex, and Audeze (the LCD2 isn't technically out yet) orthos. And so, without further ado, here is my view on the three: HE5: A good amount of soundstage and there is a slight angling of the pads, which is a nice touch. The pads themselves are quite stiff and aren't the most comfy, and the cable isn't al…

Nice to see everyone today. USG, thanks very much for the name tags; they turned out great.

While there were not a lot of Head Casers there this year, the ones that were made the meet worthwhile. Had a good time seeing some of the old school NY crew and finding new toys I need to buy. Best of show for me was the JH-3A and the SR-009 on the BH and Woo amp. Ari's Tower of Power with some rude Ginger hand jumping into my shot. Kerry's Blue Hawaii Random dorks with headphones. Random Gear Colin, a little too excited about Diet Mt. Dew.

  10. Started by Aura,

It was fun. Too tired to comment on gear right now.

  11. Started by renlute,

Thanks to Icarium for hosting a great meet on Saturday, with a small but select batch of audiophiles and gear. And thanks to Craig for bringing some of his product line. I was able to spend some time comparing an HD800 with my K702 on his pre-release Eddie Current Balancing Act. I doubt that recorded Bach organ works can sound better than this. Craig and his new baby. Our host and the Eddie Current Zana Deux. Woo Audio amp and other gear I wish I could afford. I also compared a K701 with my K702, and noticed that the notorious headband bumps are…

  12. Started by blubliss,

We got together at the last minute at my mom's house (she was away) for a small meet. Sorry I couldn't invite more people. We had me, stv1756, another friend of mine who made lunch, n3rdling, purrin, 909, and anaxilus. Gear was mostly electrostatic: T2, HV, BH, Aristaeus. Dynamic: Balancing Act. Phones: 009x2, HE90x2, 007, SR-O, HD800, LCD-3x2, LCD-2r2, R10x2. We had a great time and a nice pasta lunch made by my native Italian friend. He made a home-made sauce, very nice. Purrin was talking about the 009 in the LCD-3 thread, about how it changes with source quite a bit, and I agree. We had everything running through the Amarra Model 4, and could switch bet…

  13. Started by DigiPete,

Had a good time yesterday at my house. Grover Huffman (maker of Grover Cables) came over peddling his wares.... well not really peddling.... I had upgraded three pairs of my Sc. Grover ICs to his newest creation the Sx IC I also replaced my 10 foot long Monster Speaker Cables (yuck!!) with 3 foot long Grover Sx speaker cables. But really its about the comraderie, so Grover came over cables in hand, so we could have some fun swapping cables and doing some listening. Oh... he also brought another pair of surprises A pair of 60 watt tube monoblocks which he built himself So we started off by listening to my system in its baseline state with …

  14. Started by episiarch,

My full impressions (and everybody else's) are over at that other place, but here are my short takeaways, in case anyone's interested. Mr Speakers Ether C is great. Different people rate it differently compared to HD800, Ether (open), etc., etc., but I didn't speak to anyone who wasn't impressed by it. Personally I could have spent all weekend listening on these (at the Schiit table with their multibit DACs and Mjolnir 2)Chord Hugo is a real winner. It's not just another semiportable DAC/amp (there's very different stuff going on inside), and the difference is really audible. There is a tabletop Hugo now too, but I didn't listen to it (there's a higher end one in the …

  15. I wasn't there, so not much I can say. Some gear showed up, some drinkin got done. Stevieo probably did something highly inappropriate, at some point. Good times were had by most.

  16. not really a meet. went to carls awesome house for a few hours and listened to some tunes via speakers. in the line up were super small fonkens (forget if they were micro or mini fonkens) but the damn things were tiny and metronomes. some uber apogee speakers i hadnt known about were added to the mix towards the end for a song. amp of choice was some unknown 10 watt tube concoction which sounded quite nice feeding the metronomes. the fostex fe 127e drivers were enabled and the midrange was everything that it was hyped up to be if not better. the top end was lot a little but it was just the right amount of loss for a really nice listening session. even at louder volumes th…

Ken started this over on the other side but this is where all the love is Hey all , really good to have met all the new folk and of course to catch up with old faces. I just love the DIY enthusiasm in PDX , yes I am a little biased but it is fun to 'shoot the breeze' without people glazing over. talk about gangsta :beerchug: Finally managed to twist searleb's arm to join us and he brought along his UBER cool Bijou - very clean workmanship and just oozes simplicity and form. oh yeah - sounds like a Bijou , you have to hear one to get it. Many new experiences and some I have been wanting have as well as revisiting. Many highlights for me…

Just copying what I wrote on the other site minus the not so witty banter Rigs and stuff I was impressed with- Audio Research transport - Benchmark DAC 1 - Singlepower Supra - Balanced HD 650 One of the best dynamic rigs at the meet and I spent a lot of time with this one. The overpowering bass that the 650s usually have were nicely diffused. The soundstage was the biggest I've heard from Senns. They were nice and neutral, got everything right. I cant say anything bad about them, except that they werent grados. Really kicked the Apache's butt in everyway. Cary 300/303 - Stax 007t - Stax Omega 2 This was one of the few times that I spent a lot of time with an el…

Never call a friend about going to Vegas if your not totally serious. After several phone calls Al and I booked a one day blitz of CES madness to see if the HD 800 hype was for real. I'm on an iPhone so more details to come but the HD 800 is the real deal and to me worth every penny of the $1400 asking price. We got into Vegas at 10am and went straight to the Senn display area for a 20 minute session each with the HD800. All I can say it they sound Great and are competitive with any top tier headphone (current or discontinued). Thanks to Jude, Drew and Tyl for the hookup and it was great to hang with Ed, Naaman and his Dave. Dinner and drinks was a blast! To be c…

  20. This was a bit different kind of shindig than your usual Head-X.org meet. These were "old farts" (their term, not mine), while "we" were the "young farts" (again, their term). Ingwe was particularly thrilled with that, as he's old. They had Tyll come out to Atlanta for a meet/greet + presentation on computer audio. I arrived around 60% of the way through the 2 hour "set-up" time, which was really about the only time one had to listen to music in a reasonable environment (more on this later). I pulled in and got out of the car and saw TomB pulling in. I went over and caught up a minute before heading into the hotel where we were greeted by two friendly ladies with …

Decent meet. Got to try my 007s with the BHSE and listen to the GSX so I was happy. Todd listening to his new HP system.

  22. Well I was down in the LA area on business and to check out a few hotels with David (909) so a stop by Craig's (Eddie Current) house was in order. So on my way home I stopped by with David (909) for a listen. Craig has been cooking up a new balanced amp since the Mayberry on Acid meet. The Balancing Act and the Nautilus have been in various states for prototyping for a while now. So we were able to hear the Nautilus which debuted at the recent NorCal meet in San Mateo and the latest version of the balacing act. The BA first appeared at the Maberry on Acid meet with smaller tubes that were enclosed in the amp. While we all liked the amp Craig scrapped that one and p…

The meet's still in progress, so no real impressions to speak of. I just figured I'd check in. I'm hosting, and there's a lot to be said for not having to break down and set up my rig somewhere else! The group here is myself, Vince (n_maher), Dave (drp) and Haj (Salt Peanuts). I'm sure we'll get to the equipment present, impressions and pics later. For now? Back to listening!

Not really a "meet" per se, at least as far as Head-Fi meets go, but a good time regardless. As the event was only 4 hours and primarily for the LA/OC Audio Society, I did not expect to do much listening, and indeed did very little and got to spend only a few minutes with a phat pad-modded Audio-Technica AD2000. (Which was still pretty good, even if it sucked out the mid-range a bit compared to a stock non-modded AD2K.) I spent most of the event talking to various people and taking photos wherever I could. The Head-Fier/Head-Caser turn-out was pretty good actually and I saw various familiar faces. Notable equipment highlights - Tyll's Wadia (not sure which model) &…

Wow another great mini at Craig's house, I wanted to come down to hear Joe's (Dreamcomposer) balanced Zana and A/B with the HD-2 that I own. Well I got to do that and a whole lot more. Rounding out the amp line up was Eddie Current HD2 Eddie Current Balanced Zana Duex Eddie Current balancing act (prototype) We also had a singled ended Zana and a EC proto amp with C41 power tubes that sounded great. David (909) was nice enough to bring his amazing source the Reimyo 777 CDP, if you get the chance this is one great sounding source. We also had the pleasure of going back to the future and hearing to well regarded linear tracking turntables from the late 70/80s the Sony…
