Like a maroon, I'm getting the itch to ditch my highly enjoyable and convenient active Quads for some passive P3ESRs. This means I'll need an outboard amp, which is going to be a tight fit on my already-overloaded desk. So I guess I'm looking for suggestions on amps that are modestly sized and modestly powered and might have modest synergy with the Harbeths -- which are a 6 ohm load and 84dB sensitive and will be used in the very nearfield. There are a couple of Class D options which obviously fit the form factor -- Headroom, Bel Canto S300 -- but I'm not sure about the sonics. Good Morning Team! So I've decided 2009 is the year of new speaker amplification. I have no intentions of upgrading my vinyl rig until the distant future, and I'm done with digital sources indefinitely. My speakers are Quad 22Ls, and my current amp is the Cambridge Audio 840A integrated. When I was posting of my out of control bass woes over at Audio Asylum, at least one guy who I've exchanged emails with before said the 840A might be the problem, and that I should look to other amps. Waffling context begins... My parents house has two front rooms, one of which has been since year dot the living room, and has the television and sofas and is generally where people sit and veg out or chat or read the paper or whatever. The other front room has been known since I was a little kiddie as "the music room". Hi, I am looking for a set of cheap bookshelves/speakers that can take a digital input from my tv. I just got a new gt50 for the main viewing family room which has a decent sound bar. The g25 that was there went upstairs to the living room, and the stock speakers are real bad. Would love to just take the optical out from the tv, plug them in the speakers, and be done with it. I could have swore such a thing exists but I can't seem to find it. Thanks! I?m counting my chickens before they hatch a bit, but I?m looking for some suggestions/recommendations for speakers and power amp at around $1600-$2000. They will be fed by 840C as a source and I will most likely be using either my Beta22 or Luminous Audio Axiom as a preamp for the time being. I prefer clear and cohesive sound throughout with good PRaT, and I?ll always take bass quality over quantity. One undecided factor is whether to sell my headphone gears for additional speaker fund, but I think I?m going to keep them for late-night listening and other times when I can use speakers. I decided to get some decent set of nearfield speakers to have on the desk next to the wall and I was thinking in something like the Audio engine A5 or Adam A5x. Don't know if I can get better for the money, what do you guys suggest?

With postjack's acquisition of Tkam's Quad 22Ls, it certainly looks like Quad is the FOTM lol. I got my Quad 12L active monitors today, and I am very pleased with the purchase, considering that I got it at half the MSRP. I find them to be very detailed and resolving, which shouldn't be surprising given that they are designed for studio mixing, but they are definitely not harsh. If anything, they have more of a treble roll-off than either my L3000s and K1000s. The midrange is smoooth though, and very pleasing to the ear, and bass has decent impact but is a bit sloppy right now because I'm still using the cardboxes they came with as temporary stands. So after 3 months, I'm getting bit tired of needing to get up each time I want to change the volume. Assuming some unexpected expenses don't come up, I've been thinking about Adcom GFP-750, maybe in a month or two. Are there anything else I should be looking for? Also, anyone know anything about PS Audio's P-200?

I found a very nice deal on good condition and perfect working order Stax ELS-F81 speakers. Do you think I should side-grade?

I was listening to Wish You Were Here the other day and I swear, Gilmour was in the wall playing and singing to me. I had to get my roommate in my seat and he said "creepy, it's like your own personal concert." This setup isn't even expensive or acoustically well set up. And then I realized that there is no avoiding getting a speaker rig when I settle.

Ok let me explain how my speaker rig is currently setup. I have the APL 3910 and the Modwright 9100ES going into the two of the inputs on the Modwright SWL 9.0SE. The modwright pre's outputs are connected to the D-Sonic power amp. Now on to where the problem(s) come into play. I also have my denon 4308ci recievers front channel pre-outs connected to the HT Bypass input on the Modwright pre. The ht bypass input essentially ignores the volume control on the modwright allowing the volume to be controlled by only the reciever. So I figure I would get better responses posting this question here instead of at head-fi, because you guys probably have more experience with speakers. So like the title says, what speakers would you recommend at $1000, new or used? My room size is a 10x12x10 (WxLxH). The one thing I don't want is for the sound to be too overwhelming, and I definitely do not want boomy bass. There will not be a subwoofer. I love reading the Pass DIY forums and seeing all the cool stuff Nelson comes up with. Monsoon speakers seem to be the best computer speakers out there so I've been looking into getting a pair of MH-500s used on ebay. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Pretty nice little package. 12"*12"*14", sealed 10" woofer, 50lbs, 1000W RMS, claimed 23Hz extension, $800. If I ever get a sub for the office rig, this will be near the top of my list. Only thing I can think of that would probably do more for less is the Epik Vanquish at $700, but that's quite a bit bigger and heavier.

I'm about to move and need to downsize my Maggie MG-1.5/QR's (bought in 1989) to something that won't dominate the room. I've got a Classe CA-200 from a few decades ago. I do love the sound. I'm looking to trade in for something that could sit nicely and likely integrate into my home theater setup. A high WAF is required. I don't know what the trade-in value of these are but I'm likely to shed a tear or two in the process. If I could cover just new speakers for whatever the current amp & speakers go for I'd be ok with that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

OK picked up a pair of Harbeth P3ES-2 locally at a decent price. Hooked up to my old Bryston B60R integrated (60wpc 8ohm) fed by 840c (spinning CDs and also fed optically by a macmini). I need to cook this in for awhile, but damn it sounds really nice. Listening to Beck/Sea Change now in nearfield mode. I'm really enjoying the freedom from headphone strapped to my head (of course, if I'm going to rock out with my ___ out, I still reach for the headphones so as not to disturb the household). I rarely do any real critical listening due to the amount of work I have from school so I've been thinking about moving to a small speaker system for a bit. I dont really want to hassle with an amp to go with the speakers since I'll be moving around a lot and living in a small dorm room doesnt give me a lot of space to work with. I've been looking for the Audioengine 5s (just missed a pair of Audioengine 5s for 200 ) and Quad 11Ls on ebay and audiogon. Is there anything else I should keep an eye out for? That is the question. Spent a good deal of time with both this week, and to me, sonicly they are equal, and very close in sound signature. My wife likes the ANs more i dont really care either way. But the fact i can get by with 5-10 watts with the ANs is pretty cool. Down side is i would have to pull new dedicated lines and turn my room around so i can corner load them. Downside with the harbeths is i would probably move to more powerful tube amps. That means money, and heat. Price is pretty equal. I can get AN demos for $12K plus shipping for them and stands. I have been looking for some small active speakers for my room so I did a whole lot of research and ended up auditioning studio monitors at a local store. I listened to the following: Adam A5x,A7x JBL LSR2325P Presonus Eris E8 Yamaha HS7 Neumann KH120 ... And I didn't like them. I tried moving around the test room, aligning my ears to the tweeters, various types of music (including some tracks I know well), nothing seemed to work. I found this really frustrating as I had read over and over again that studio monitors should present an accurate sound and have a linear frequency response. I have a pair of AV123 X-SLS towers that are having issues. I am probably still going to try and fix them (and do something with them) but I never really liked them. They sound really dark and muddy. Oh well. They are fine for HT but I am thinking that maybe it is time to get some new speakers. I may also get a new center and surrounds (I have some crappy Cambridge Audio works stuff for that right now) now or later. The sub is also an AV123, is ok but it hums so it is off most of the time.
