Meet Impressions

My God, It's Full of Stars!

  1. Started by DigiPete,

Had a good time yesterday at my house. Grover Huffman (maker of Grover Cables) came over peddling his wares.... well not really peddling.... I had upgraded three pairs of my Sc. Grover ICs to his newest creation the Sx IC I also replaced my 10 foot long Monster Speaker Cables (yuck!!) with 3 foot long Grover Sx speaker cables. But really its about the comraderie, so Grover came over cables in hand, so we could have some fun swapping cables and doing some listening. Oh... he also brought another pair of surprises A pair of 60 watt tube monoblocks which he built himself So we started off by listening to my system in its baseline state with …

  2. Started by Asr,

I know it's a bit early for this, but the anticipation is building for what will surely be an awesome 3 days of audio goodness! My gear is all packed up and so are my clothes, because I'm far enough from Denver that it'd be a pain in the ass to make the round-trip drive twice a day for 3 days. And also because I have a proactive role in this year's show, plus there are a bunch of cool people to hang out with this time. Not sure how soon pics will be coming because I recently had to format my laptop (new HD) and couldn't find my Photoshop Elements CD in time to install it. Will look for a freeware alternative in the meantime.... Heading to Denver tonight after work …

  3. Started by swt61,

Pabbi1 and myself were graciously hosted by luvdunhill, wife and family for an overnight DIYfest in Austin this weekend. Great food, great fun and even a little bit of DIY work thrown in for good measure. My project was the Pass F5 I'm building. I had yet to wire the boards and run the initial fire up, which I wasn't comfortable doing without an experienced DIYer present. Marc was tugged back and forth between Al's project and mine, without complaint one. He didn't even attemp to work on his own extensive list of extremely eye catching projects, choosing instead to devote his time to us. For that and the great hospitality by the entire luvdunhill family (yes the chi…

  4. Started by NightWoundsTime,

We're here, we're moderately sober, and there's gear being set up. Seems like time for an impressions thread. Duggeh's pictures will tell the story far more accurately than I can, so I'll get out of the way.

  5. not really a meet. went to carls awesome house for a few hours and listened to some tunes via speakers. in the line up were super small fonkens (forget if they were micro or mini fonkens) but the damn things were tiny and metronomes. some uber apogee speakers i hadnt known about were added to the mix towards the end for a song. amp of choice was some unknown 10 watt tube concoction which sounded quite nice feeding the metronomes. the fostex fe 127e drivers were enabled and the midrange was everything that it was hyped up to be if not better. the top end was lot a little but it was just the right amount of loss for a really nice listening session. even at louder volumes th…

  6. Started by Aura,

It was fun. Too tired to comment on gear right now.

  7. No impressions for now, to come later. Pics below from Friday 5/29. 8. Started by jp11801,

Not much to say as I am burnt out after a fun filled day with great freiends and great gear. More to come tomorrow after I recover.

  9. This was a bit different kind of shindig than your usual Head-X.org meet. These were "old farts" (their term, not mine), while "we" were the "young farts" (again, their term). Ingwe was particularly thrilled with that, as he's old. They had Tyll come out to Atlanta for a meet/greet + presentation on computer audio. I arrived around 60% of the way through the 2 hour "set-up" time, which was really about the only time one had to listen to music in a reasonable environment (more on this later). I pulled in and got out of the car and saw TomB pulling in. I went over and caught up a minute before heading into the hotel where we were greeted by two friendly ladies with …

Ken started this over on the other side but this is where all the love is Hey all , really good to have met all the new folk and of course to catch up with old faces. I just love the DIY enthusiasm in PDX , yes I am a little biased but it is fun to 'shoot the breeze' without people glazing over. talk about gangsta :beerchug: Finally managed to twist searleb's arm to join us and he brought along his UBER cool Bijou - very clean workmanship and just oozes simplicity and form. oh yeah - sounds like a Bijou , you have to hear one to get it. Many new experiences and some I have been wanting have as well as revisiting. Many highlights for me…

  11. Started by NightWoundsTime,

Yeah this is a meet thread and shit. Have fun.

  12. Started by Asr,

Been wanting to go to a Head-Fi meet incognito for a long time so I finally did it for "CanFest" in Charlotte, NC. The meet is tomorrow but I'm here and I have some pre-meet impressions to share. Oh and half the reason I came to this meet: Joe Grado! Closed headphones at Sam Ash (across from the hotel) - Ultrasone Proline 650 vs Senn HD280 Pro vs Sony MDR-7506: There was some obnoxious techno music running on this multi-headphone display so my impressions are limited on that alone, but despite that I could still tell that the Ultrasone 650 sucked ass, because it was honestly terrible, there's no other way to put it. There was a huge suck-out of all the frequencies…

  13. Started by jp11801,

Never call a friend about going to Vegas if your not totally serious. After several phone calls Al and I booked a one day blitz of CES madness to see if the HD 800 hype was for real. I'm on an iPhone so more details to come but the HD 800 is the real deal and to me worth every penny of the $1400 asking price. We got into Vegas at 10am and went straight to the Senn display area for a 20 minute session each with the HD800. All I can say it they sound Great and are competitive with any top tier headphone (current or discontinued). Thanks to Jude, Drew and Tyl for the hookup and it was great to hang with Ed, Naaman and his Dave. Dinner and drinks was a blast! To be c…

  14. Welcome I hosted a mini-meet at my place on Saturday, including HeadphoneAddict, Blutarsky, Sherwood, wiatrob and myself. And HeadphoneAddict's son (he has a Stax rig!) The idea of a small meet was to keep things more accomodating to getting some critical listening done - near impossible to do at full meets. And we did just that It's much more affordable, too All in all, it was a good success. A lot was learned, definitely by me and hopefully by all. Thank yous go out to: HeadRoom, without whom we would not have had the D7Ks to review And Drew at Moon-Audio, without whom we would not have had the Senn cables, the Creek, the Shanling nor the iQu…

  15. Started by Asr,

Yeah yeah I know, the show doesn't start until Friday but I can't wait! I'm actually interested in speakers this year so I'm looking forward to listening to as many as I can! I've taken Friday off work so I can check out all 3 days! If there are any requests, post 'em here and I'll see if I can include them on my rounds. Exhibitor list here: Rocky Mountain Audiofest 2008 And will any familiar Head-Casers/Fiers be there?

  16. Started by Asr,

Meet Impressions 'Twas another great meet to add to the history books. Quality listening enhanced by a group of great people. Lots of new faces too, was great to meet everyone. Big thanks to 909 for organizing and pulling it off without a hitch. Great location also, will make for another great National Meet next year, and I can see this hotel will work out great for quieter listening in more isolated environments. The only issue that will need to be worked on will be the A/C. And as I've said before on the other site, these meets are always a great experience. Not only for the gear but for the people who come - I continue to be impressed by the quality of people in…

  17. Started by Asr,

Not really a "meet" per se, at least as far as Head-Fi meets go, but a good time regardless. As the event was only 4 hours and primarily for the LA/OC Audio Society, I did not expect to do much listening, and indeed did very little and got to spend only a few minutes with a phat pad-modded Audio-Technica AD2000. (Which was still pretty good, even if it sucked out the mid-range a bit compared to a stock non-modded AD2K.) I spent most of the event talking to various people and taking photos wherever I could. The Head-Fier/Head-Caser turn-out was pretty good actually and I saw various familiar faces. Notable equipment highlights - Tyll's Wadia (not sure which model) &…

  18. Started by GPH,

Thanks again to Philippe (papomaster) for hosting this excellent meet. I had a great time listening to all of the headphone setups and sharing knowledge and opinions with the other guys. The atmosphere was even friendlier than our last meet and I think we have a good future as a headphone community here in Montreal. I'm not too good at "speaking audio", but I'll do my best writing some short impressions from the setups with which I had the chance to spend quality time. These were based on short-term listening in a crowded room with people talking so take it with a grain of salt. Laptop -> Nuforce Icon -> Stax SRD-6 -> Stax SR-Gamma I thought this was a …

Below is the post from Headfi here is the link Norcal Mini-ish Meet impressions 8-9-08 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio Wow what a fun meet, thanks to Dan for opening his home to us all We had a great group of folks there that all shared a deep love of music and gear. It showed with lively discussion. I eneded up staying at Dans place when the group went to lunch so I could get some quite time listening done. There was a ton of of top flight gear considering this was a mini meet. Once again even though I was there for 12 hours I still did not listen everything. Eddie Current, a tale of three amps. The Nautilus, this is one heck of …

  20. I wasn't there, so not much I can say. Some gear showed up, some drinkin got done. Stevieo probably did something highly inappropriate, at some point. Good times were had by most.

  21. Well I was down in the LA area on business and to check out a few hotels with David (909) so a stop by Craig's (Eddie Current) house was in order. So on my way home I stopped by with David (909) for a listen. Craig has been cooking up a new balanced amp since the Mayberry on Acid meet. The Balancing Act and the Nautilus have been in various states for prototyping for a while now. So we were able to hear the Nautilus which debuted at the recent NorCal meet in San Mateo and the latest version of the balacing act. The BA first appeared at the Maberry on Acid meet with smaller tubes that were enclosed in the amp. While we all liked the amp Craig scrapped that one and p…

I posted these over on HF and wanted to share them with you all as well. We spent 2 days at this insane event, what a great time I am beat but here are the first set of pics and thoughts. Sonist Speakers these were in many of the rooms and they make 2 types of speaker both use a ribbon tweeter and a standard bass speaker. They are fairly efficient which is why many used them but IMHO they are mediocre at best. They image poorly and seem slightly off tonally I really wanted to hear the electra print amps and get a good impression of them but it was impossible as they used the floorstanders of these and it left me feeling flat. Cold War Amp this amp was a beauty and t…

spending some time with the ec balancing act and an apuresound balanced hd600. This amp is ridiculous. I had no idea the hd600 was capable of this much bass.

  25. I guess I'll start this here with what I posted over at head-fi: Well, first things first, thanks to cryhavoc for a great job organizing this meet and GO SPURS. Second thanks to skylab and his wonderful family for allowing all us crazy headfiers to share their beautiful domicile. I must say Rob, I only hope my son grows up to be as well-behaved and charming as your children. O.K. now on to the real business. The highlight of the day for me was unfortunately not headphone related. It was Skylab's vinyl rig, the sound was glorious (as is Rob,s taste in music, eclectic is good!). The Denon turntable was not only glorious to behold but produced some great sounds, especi…
